21st Century, good luck know the source of parts for anything. USA guidance systems on the Tomahawk cruise missiles depend on special materials that China has a near monopoly on producing. Made / assembled where ???

Jeez unbelievable! Not satisfied with running off the road and crashing. And why the hell stop in the middle of the road, and reportedly in front of a gas station where there would have been more space?

Driver killed as bus toppled during wheel change

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

AMUT PRAKAN: A driver was crushed to death while changing a wheel after the six-wheeled bus he had driven toppled on Sukhumvit Soi 72 in tambon Samrong Nua of Muang district Friday morning.

The incident happened in front of a Shell petrol station on the middle inbound lane of Sukhumvit Road at about 7am.

The body of driver Boonplook Nuamson, 51, was found under the right rear part of the bus. A right rear wheel of the bus was missing.

Police quoted eyewitnesses as saying that the driver was using a jack to lift the vehicle for the wheel replacement. As the vehicle was being lifted, it tilted and the weight pressured and burst other rear wheels, causing the bus to topple on the driver.

Police found that a right rear wheel had earlier been loosened from the bus because its bolts were snapped. The wheel hit and damaged a car.

They really shouldn't drive the small buses only half full. If full up the passengers don't get thrown about so much when they crash!

Man killed in crash of van carrying 17

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

SURIN: A Bangkok-Ubon Ratchathani passenger van packed with 17 passengers struck a power pole, killing one man and injuring 13, in Surin early Saturday.

The fatal crash occurred between kilometre makers 18 and 19 on Highway 226 along the Surin-Si Sa Ket route in tambon Muang Tee of Muang district, said Pol Col Sairung Yaemngam, a duty officer at the district police station, who received the call at 2.30am.

Police and rescue workers found the van with Bangkok licence plates overturned in a roadside ditch. The body of a man was found about 100 metres away. The other passengers had also been thrown from the vehicle and 13 in all had injuries and were rushed to Surin Hospital.

Van driver Thawit Khenbuppa, 39, told police that the van left Bangkok at around 7pm Friday and was en route to Ubon Ratchathani. Driving through Surin at around 2am, he said he felt the van swerve so he turned the steering wheel but lost control.

Police say they believe the driver had dozed off the wheel, causing him to lose control of the van. The vehicle then veered off the road, hit a power pole and overturned.

The driver is being held in police custody and could face charges of reckless driving causing death and injuries.

2 AM yes likely dozed off. I ride with Sombat Tour buses, during the day as the drivers look fairly
awake, and I have not had a problem with the Bangkok to Hua Hin portion of their route.
My Thai family use the company quite often as well and trust them way more then the mini
bus services.

13 injured in a thriller movie-like van crash
Thirteen people were injured when their passenger van crashed into a truck trailer, wedged there and was dragged along the road as the truckie tried to shake it off.

Passenger Darika Phimphaeng told police the van driver had tried to overtake the trailer truck, moving into the right lane, but the truck also suddenly moved across into the right lane. The van crashed hard against the rear of the trailer, and stuck there.

Van driver Pramot Bunchan was seriously injured and all 12 passengers received lesser injuries. Their conditions were being monitored by doctors at Ban Phai Hospital.

The van had picked up the passengers in Nakhon Phanom on Tuesday. The accident occured on the Ban Phai-Borabue road in Ban Phai district, Khon Kaen, late that night.

The van was locked onto the truck trailer's rear end by the force of the impact.

I never want to travel in Thailand at night. It's bad enough in the daytime. Will civilization ever reach Thailand?

This is yet another subject where it's never stated if the owners of the companies who control these vehicles and drivers are held responsible. 46 pages in this thread and I don't think there is one reference concerning ultimate responsibility by the people behind the desks in the office. No mention of driver log books, vehicle maintenance records, health and substance abuse checks etc. It's probably a subject where the deeper you dig the more of an ungodly mess it becomes. :( Pete

Does Thailand utilize the European Tachograph or something similar to track driver and vehicle usage? I seem to recall in some cases the police had identified speeding prior to an accident so maybe they have something in place.

30 tourists flee burning bus

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

A bus carrying Taiwanese tourists caught fire at an expressway entrance in Phra Khanong district of Bangkok on Saturday afternoon, sending more than 30 occupants fleeing in panic. No injuries were reported.

The bus, belonging to YSK Transport Co, caught fire at around 1pm shortly after entering the inbound Chalerm Mahanakhon expressway in Bang Na, about 200 metres from the Sukhumvit 62 toll gate, at around 12.45pm, Thai media reported.

Fire trucks were deployed to the scene to combat the flames which spread quickly but were soon extinguished. The bus was badly damaged.

Bus driver Peerapong Rompakdi, 43, said he had picked up the Taiwanese group from a hotel in Samut Prakan to take them shopping at the Chatuchak Weekend Market when some passengers complained about a burning smell, Thairath Online reported.

He then parked the bus along the roadside, about 200 metres from the Sukhumvit 62 tollgate, and saw flames engulfing the luggage compartment. He immediately shouted to ask a tour guide to tell tourists to leave the bus.
Many tourists burst into tears as their belongings were burned.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire.(that will fix it!)

They seem to conveniently never state if these busses and vans that are catching on fire are liquid gas conversions. Should be a reporter "must ask" question when covering these events. I have no faith in the safety of that type of fuel system here regardless of who does the conversion. Pete

Driver miraculously survives after his car is crushed when a truck falls on it

https://au.news.yahoo.com/driver-miracu ... 28241.html

The driver of a white car crushed by a truck has somehow managed to survive in a horrific crash filmed in Thailand.

The shocking accident happened just 90 metres from Thai Airways worker Worawut Yuyatmak’s front door in the Lat Krabang area of Bangkok.

The footage shows Mr Yuyatmak driving in his Toyota Fortuner as the 41-tonne soybean-delivery-truck approaches a bend in the opposite direction.

In the video, the truck can be seen turning the corner but begins to lose control. It then falls onto its right side and crushes the Toyota.

Mr Yuyatmak’s vehicle was wrecked in the smash and rescue workers were amazed to hear him sound his car horn to let them know he was alive.

Emergency crews took more than two hours to free the 42-year-old from the twisted shell of his vehicle.
He informed ambulance staff he felt pain in his left side and suffered some leg and arm injuries.

However, Mr Yuyatmakt’s overall condition was far better than expected – and he reportedly gave a thumbs up to onlookers as he was taken to hospital for treatment.

His wife revealed he had been returning from a lecture in nearby Phetchaburi when the accident happened.
The couple had been planning to celebrate Mr Yuyatmakt’s birthday, which was two days earlier.

The trucker, Narong Wongpen, 33, told police he had only been travelling at 40km/h when he took the bend.
He has been charged with driving recklessly, leading to another person’s injury.

Police have not given details but Thairath Online said an 18-wheel truck slammed into three other vehicles parking by the roadside at kilometre marker 57.
