Re: How can Thailand curb its appalling road fatality rate?

Post by Spitfire »

Nobody cares about what they do anymore and responsibility is now a thing of the past/an abstract notion for a disproportionately large section of society. To have so many on a bike is crazy...but then again, the morons that do this are often not brought to book, just the kids that die like in this case or others that are the real victims. How can you fall asleep on a bike? WHF, stupid.

I could go on....but won't.

I guess his hazard lights were not working! But another senseless "accident". It appears that it was a divided road where you would expect to be a bit safer from head-on collisions.

Six killed, 3 injured in Saraburi lorry crash

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... recent_box

SARABURI: Six men, five of them employees of the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), were killed and three other people injured after an articulated lorry loaded with laterite rammed into a stationary PEA pick-up truck in Nong Khae district on Sunday morning, according to media reports.

The truck, driven by Chucheep Upachit, 27, was carrying laterite from Na Phra Lan area in Saraburi to a client in Pathum Thani province, reported Naew Na online.

At an intersection to Nong Khae market, the driver lost control of the truck, causing it to smash into the PEA pick-up parked on one side of the Bangkok-bound Phahon Yothin road in front of a warehouse at kilometre marker No 85.  At the time, PEA workers were replacing old power poles and repairing high-voltage transmission lines.

The impact caused the PEA vehicle to fly through the air and land in roadside bush about 40 metres away.  The truck rammed into a power pole and the wall of the warehouse, and was engulfed in flames, killing the driver.

Five PEA employees working at the scene were crushed to death.  They were identified as Samran Sriphum, 27, Sakchai Kerdmee, 25, Suchart Sakaew, 30, Veerachai Malison, 20, and Somboon Maneenart, 45.
Three other people - Veerapol Boonmark, Chaiwat Suthi and Chawin Thaochan -- were injured.  They were admitted to Nong Khae Hospital.

Compliant filed for slow action on Chinese woman death

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

A 52-year-old Chinese man on Thursday complained with the Justice Ministry on slow prosecution concerning the death of his daughter in a road accident during her visit to Hua Hin.

Jun Mei Gao filed the complaint with Tawatchai Thaikyo, deputy permanent secretary for justice, about the death of his 25-year-old daughter, Juan Gao, in Hua Hin district, Prachuap Khiri Khan, early this month.

Accompanying Mr Jun, lawyer Narong Thongkham said Juan was riding a motorcycle and making a U-turn when a van carrying fresh pork hit her.

The woman was thrown 19 metres away from the location in urban Hua Hin where speeding was prohibited, the lawyer said. The woman succumbed to her injury at a hospital later.

The Chinese father had sought help from the Tourism and Sports Ministry because Juan was a tourist who legally visited Thailand. There was no concrete progress from police after they received a complaint on the incident. They only made an appointment for the father to negotiate for damages with the insurance firm of the van, the lawyer said.

Mr Jun said he was running out of money as the morgue where her body was kept charged him 2,000 baht a day. The alternative was even more costly -- the transport of the body back to China would cost more than 100,000 baht.

Besides, the pork transporter would not meet him.

Mr Tawatchai said he wondered why local police had not pressed charges as the incident had happened several days ago.

Three killed, four badly hurt in Songkhla crash

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

SONGKHLA: Two women and a girl were killed and four others badly hurt when a pickup truck carrying pineapple residue jumped a road median strip to collide head-on with a multi-purpose vehicle in Rattaphum district on Friday morning.

The fatal crash occurred at around 9am on Asia Highway in tambon Khuharat in Songkhla heading to Phatthalung province.

A Toyota Vigo pick-up truck, loaded with sacks containing pineapple residue, suddenly veered across the road's dividing strip and collided head-on with a Nissan pickup truck modified as a multi-purpose vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

The force of the crash killed two women and a 12-year-old girl on board the Nissan vehicle instantly. The driver and two others riding in the vehicle were seriously injured, and all were trapped in the wreckage. The driver of the Toyota pickup truck, who was travelling alone, was also seriously hurt and trapped inside his wrecked vehicle. All four injured people were rushed to Hat Yai Hospital.

Police believed the driver of the Vigo pickup truck might have dozed off behind the wheel.  They were investigating.

14 burnt to death after van crash in Sing Buri

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

SING BURI: Thirteen Myanmar nationals and a Thai driver were killed after being trapped inside a van engulfed in flames following a car crash in Muang district Friday early morning.

Police and rescue workers were despatched to the scene after Muang Sing Buri police had been alerted to a crash on the Asian Highway km 90+600, which leads to Bangkok, at 2.30am.

Upon arrival, the charred wreckage of the van with a Bangkok licence plate was 10m away from a 10-wheeled lorry loaded with rice with a Nakhon Sawan licence plate. The lorry was parked in the middle of the road. The back of the vehicle also bears a scratch due to the accident.

Rescue workers then retrieved the charred bodies of 14 victims -- 13 Myanmar people and the Thai driver -- from the van, which also bear the name of its company, “Boon Ruean Tour Co Ltd”.

An initial investigation indicated only that the 13 Myanmar migrants boarded the van driven by a Thai man from Mae Sot district in Tak to Bangkok.

Police have yet to identify the bodies as the bodies were badly damaged by fire.

Soonthorn Fakthong, a 55-year-old lorry driver, said he was on his way to deliver rice to Saraburi. While approaching the scene, his vehicle was suddenly rear-ended by the van, resulting in a blaze which destroyed the van. He then called the police to seek help.

All bodies were taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for a post-mortem examination. After their identities are determined, the bodies will be returned to their families for traditional funeral ceremonies.

And these sick barstwerds have the poor bloody victims lined up for a trophy photo shoot! Unbelievable!

The rules also require vans to have an emergency exit that can be opened from the inside with a visible, reflective Thai sign identifying it, a 20 centimetre-wide walking space to reach the emergency exit and at least three glass-breaking hammers on the left, the right and the back of vans.
Obviously didn't work in this case!

The force of impact would have probably killed most anyway, but SO MANY fires which I can only chalk up to these LPG installations. Regardless if done to code or not, I think it's a damn dangerous system for a motor vehicle.

How often do we see a normal gasoline fueled car go up in flames regardless if hit at the rear or the front? Not nearly as many as we see with LPG tanks IMO. Pete

Road rage leads to two deaths in accident
A road rage incident that stemmed from a refusal to yield way led to an accident in Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Muang district late on Tuesday night, killing two people and severely injuring another.

Police were alerted to the accident at 10pm on the Karome road at the u-turn spot in front of the Nakhon Vocational School. At the scene, they found an Isuzu pickup truck had crashed into a bus stop and a power pole, with the driver and two passengers trapped inside. The driver was dead behind the wheel.

One passenger, Pattamawadee Kongwang, 18, died in hospital and another, Suwadee Khampeng, 18, was severely injured. Police found another damaged pickup at the scene. The driver, Anuwat Pongthongmuang, 22, and his girlfriend were not injured. Anuwat told police that he was driving his girlfriend home when the Isuzu pickup tried to overtake him, but he refused to give way and sped up.

Anuwat said the Isuzu also picked up speed and started to overtake him even though he was driving at at least 100 kilometres per hour. Anuwat said when he was approaching the u-turn, he saw a motorcycle with a sidecar was about to cut in, so he braked. However, his pickup swerved to the right and hit the back of the Isuzu pickup, causing it to plunge to the left and hit the bus stop and power pole. Anuwat was arrested on a charge of reckless driving causing deaths and injuries.

Fairly sure her name is "Lucky"

Thai stall holder's miraculous escape
4:07pm Dec 1, 2017

A woman who was sitting in a roadside food stall walked away apparently unscathed after a vehicle crashed into it.
Video shows yesterday’s dramatic incident near the city of Nakhon Si Thammarat, in southern Thailand.
The woman was sitting in the banana stall when a vehicle suddenly smashed into the wooden gazebo-like structure.
Within seconds it collapsed, throwing up a cloud of dust. Footage shows wood and other debris tumble to the ground.
Amazingly the woman stands up, clutches her back, and walks away.
