Red plates - just a thought

Post by Gregjam »

Could not help but notice a comment about red plates on cars in today's paper. Wouldn't,t it be nice to see the MIB stopping all non Prachuap plated cars on red plates to see if they have their permission from the local land transport office. And of course any red plated vehicle after six in the evening.

Just a thought or should I say a distant dream. Traffic is bad enough here at the weekends so topping up the tea fund cannot make it much worse.

Do away with the entire red plate system altogether as it's completely daft and open to all sort of corruption and ambiguity. Surely they can do better than this in the 21st century....however, having said that, they can't even give the cops a modern uniform as opposed to the present YMCA Village People look with boots higher than a coyote girl.

Maybe the top police officer in the 60s or early 70s that decided on the uniform had watched to many episodes of 'Chips'.....Poncherello would be proud of them all.

When you get a new car, you get temporary red plates for approximately 3 months (TIT  ) while the full registration goes through.

Often much longer than 3 months if you are Thai. Red plates = new car and therefore wealthy! The longer you can delay changing for regular plates, the better, and longer you are perceived as wealthy :D

An old thread, but then change comes slowly here:

Transport dept to crack down on red licence plate abuses

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... recent_box

The Land Transport Department will start penalising drivers of cars with red licence plates on Sunday if they fail to register with authorities within 60 days.

Department chief Sanit Promwong announced the measure on Saturday, though he did not specify how much the initial fines would be. However, he did say that the penalties would be increased to a maximum of 10,000 baht three months after the fines are implemented.

Mr Sanit said the authorities must strictly enforce the regulation because some motorists are known to continue using the red plates as a way to avoid paying road taxes.

He said the red plates are also known to be used to mask the ownership of vehicles used in criminal activities, which further increases the need for the penalties.

The red plates are intended only to be used by new owners during the process of vehicle registration. Once registration is complete, motorists are required to switch to normal white plates.

Authorities allow a two-month window for the registration process, but in response to the abuses, this timeframe will be halved.
Until Dec 31, new vehicle owners must register within 60 days of the day they receive their vehicles from the seller.
In most cases, "the car registration currently takes only one day", Mr Sanit said.

From Jan 1, the Land Transport Department will tighten up the regulation, requiring new owners to register within 30 days.

Violators will be fined up to 10,000 baht under the 1979 Automobile Act for using unregistered cars, Mr Sanit said.
"This stringent enforcement will be in place until a law cancelling the red car licence plates comes into effect," he said.

The department announced in 2015 it proposed amendments to the Automobile Act and the 1979 Land Transport Act in order to discontinue the red plates.
May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil know`s you`re dead!

Perhaps already stated somewhere but one of the biggest abusers are the new car dealers. You have already paid them the required tax but they "use" the money and don't promptly pay the tax to the Gov. This results in having red plates for a long period of time and always getting the answer from the dealer ..." white plates not here yet...." when making inquiries. Hopefully these new procedure will cure this particular problem. Pete

It wasn't so long ago that police chiefs were recommending their subordinates watch CSI.

The case is simple. When you buy a new car you get a temporary red plate, depending the province after 3 months (more or less) you get the normal plate. Thais like to drive long time with red plates because everybody can see that they have a new car. That's Thai exhibitionism.

The article I read in the BKK Post stated that it takes only one day to pay registration and get white plates. With this knowledge, why do they even have Red plates. Require dealers to pay registration immediately upon sale so car owner has only white plates. That is far to simple to understand for these numb nuts for breaucrats.

The article also said that the red plate system will be scrapped in due course. Let's see.
