DSI impounds 60 supercars, mostly Lamborghinis.

If you are in the market for a super car, it may have become slightly more difficult to get one quickly. Especially Lambos are in shortage

DSI impounds 60 supercars, mostly Lamborghinis

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) impounded 60 luxury cars, mostly Lamborghinis, from Bangkok showrooms on Thursday on suspicion of evasion of import taxes and other tariffs.

The seizure began with searches of nine premises. They included Niche Cars Group in Suan Luang district, its showroom at Siam Paragon shopping centre in Pathumwan district, STT Autocar on Thiam Ruammit in Huay Khwang district and a used car dealership on Pradit Manutham Road in Bang Kapi, where the vehicles were kept.

DSI officials also searched Pongsri Apartment in Bang Kapi district, house No.8/47 in tambon Thai Ban Mai of Muang district in Samut Prakan, house No.335/382 on Srinakarin Road in Hua Mak area of Bang Kapi, house No.49 on Soi Ramkhamhaeng 54 in Hua Mak area in Bang Kapi, and house No.267/13-14 on Soi Sukhumvit 63 in Watthana district.

Some of the searched houses belonged to an accountant working for the importer, Niche Cars Group, and its director.

DSI deputy director-general Korawat Panpraphakorn alleged invoices for the cars had been forged to show unrealistically low prices, a deception intended to reduce the import tax and other charges.

During the searches, the DSI impounded 60 supercars. Forty of them were Lamborghinis and the others mostly Ferraris and Lotus models, Pol Lt Col Korawat said. The cars were left where they were, but must not be sold or moved off the premises.

Dusadee Arayawut, deputy permanent secretary for justice, said the importer of the cars also sells them, and 110 government officials at operational and executive levels were suspected of colluding in the alleged offences.

The raids followed an investigation into the importation of luxury cars launched after four of six supercars on a transporter were destroyed when it caught fire in Pak Chong district, Nakhon Ratchasima, in 2013.

The truck was taking them to Si Sa Ket province. Investigators concluded it was part of an illegal operation taking luxury cars to remote provinces where they could be more conveniently registered with the aid of Land Transport officials.

You have to be excessively keen on giving the government money to own one of these cars!

"For example, a Lamborghini imported in April 2010 and seized from Niche Cars Group was declared at US$105,000, or about 3.4 million baht, which is subject to a 328% tax, or 11 million baht. But based on the Italian price tag of €286,000, or 12 million baht, the car should be subject to 41 million baht tax and so the tax paid to the government falls short by 30 million baht."

10 impounded super cars were stolen cars from abroad

About 10 of the super cars out of over 100 impounded by the Department of Special Investigation Department last week for suspected tax evasions were reported stolen from abroad and sold to buyers in Thailand by transnational carjacking gangs.

DSI director-general Pol Col Paisit Wongmuang told the media on Thursday that his office had received information from its foreign counterparts that as many as 10 of the super cars seized by the DSI last week from grey market car show rooms in Bangkok had been reported to have been stolen from their owners.

DSI officials continued their hunt for tax-dodging super cars by visiting several car show rooms. About 20 cars suspected to have under-declared their actual import prices to dodge paying higher import taxes were impounded for further examination.

On May 18, DSI officials raided Niche Car Group on Rama IX road and nine other show rooms and seized 122 super cars and luxurious cars for further examination.

DSI officials said the import prices of the cars were under-declared, causing the state to lose about 2.4 billion baht in lost tax revenue.

Import taxes on stolen cars  , maybe they need a tax credit if you can verify your car was bought legally  .

DSI: 13 of STT vehicles stolen in England

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/crime/1 ... in-England

UK police have confirmed 13 luxury cars Thai authorities impounded from a Bangkok dealer had been stolen in Britain, the chief of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) said on Tuesday.

DSI chief Paisit Wongmuang was responding to the legal action recently taken by the dealer, who also imported the vehicles. It insisted they had been legitimately acquired and taxed.

Pol Col Paisit said the UK's National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service had sent information to the DSI and it showed that 13 of the luxury cars impounded from the showrooms of STT Autocar Co in Bangkok had been stolen in Britain.

He said he was waiting to see if the UK police would file a complaint in Thailand or do so in England and seek extradition of suspects.

On June 5, STT Autocar owner Panusak "Boy Unity" Techaterasiri filed a 50-million-baht lawsuit against the DSI after its raids to seize allegedly illegal cars from his two showrooms dealt his company a heavy financial blow.

The DSI impounded 34 luxury cars from his company but he claimed to have evidence they had been legitimately acquired and properly taxed.

The DSI seized altogether 160 luxury cars from many locations in Bangkok last month on suspicions of under-declaration to evade import duty. It said about 40 of them had been stolen in Britain.

Pol Col Paisit on Tuesday said the Customs Department would report its findings on the lost tax on 32 imported cars on Thursday.

After receiving the information, the DSI would inform concerned car importers and owners about the charges. If they fail to report to the DSI, the officials will seize the cars, he said.

legitimately acquired from someone who stole them?

Does that evidence match the taxman's accounts received?
