This is being discussed again in the UK since a 'fixed wheel' cyclist (they actually have no brakes) killed a pedestrian. There are laws to say bikes must have serviceable brakes and a bell (he had neither). He, believe it or not. is completely unrepentant and has exhibited the arrogant attitude of many cyclists everywhere. There is also no UK law to punish cyclist for killing someone other than some ancient 'reckless driving' law, and it does not have a stiff enough sentence.
You can get a couple of years in jail for it, reckless and wanton driving from 1861. At least two other people have been jailed for it in the last decade.

I guess I have to go drinking on my bicycle to find out what the BIB's do her in Thailand then? If I'm not posting something here for a couple of weeks a my be in Thai jail for drunk cycling! 555!

PS! Cycling slowly only in the back Sois around 88 and 94. I would not dream of going down to Phetkasem! The closest would be East at G hotel I guess.

Q411: Can cyclists be prosecuted for drink driving on a pedal cycle?
Yes, it is an offence to ride a pedal cycle on a road or other public place whilst being unfit through drink or drugs, basically so as to be so under the influence of drink or drugs that the person does not have proper control of the pedal cycle.

The above came from a UK web site

In the UK law. Any law that refers to a 'carriage' is the same for cycles. In law, a cycle is a carriage and is governed by those same laws.

Well the lad that caused the death didn't have front brakes and my understanding that is the norm these days for Fixed Wheel Bikes - brakes (I mean), not causing death! :cuss: :banghead:

Yes, they're basically retro reproductions of old track bikes but those were used in a velodrome which is why they didn't have brakes. They don't belong on the road at all, they've been made popular by hipsters along with many other annoying things like beards and novelty flavoured beers.

I've just read through this translation of the Thai Road Traffic act and according to that, you're not required to be sober on a bicycle! ( The ability to balance ensures that you are. ) Section 84 lists the other parts of the act, non-specific to bicycles, that cyclists are required to abide by and section 43, which refers to drink driving, isn't one of them.

Sections 79-84 are for cyclists.

Yes, drinking is not applicable directly. However, they can nail a drunk rider for careless / reckless driving under this Act:
"Section 83. On the road, road shoulder, or lane provided for riding
bicycle, no driver riding bicycle shall:
(1) ride negligently or terribly which may cause damage to a person or
property"

To an earlier question, electric bicycles and scooters with motors up to 500 W power are bicycles. Simpler, more sensible and flexible than the US or EU rules.

Tbh, regarding riding a bike here, I'd be more concerned about not being killed by the morons on the road than the nitty-gritty of the laughable Thai law regarding bicycles as almost no-one knows them...or cares about them.

Besides always carrying condoms, carry bicycle training wheels as well during a night out. :duck:

Yes, cycling is fine in Thailand as long as you're selective about where you do it, I certainly wouldn't cycle on Petchakasem road but there are areas out of town where there is much less traffic and surprisingly more considerate drivers than you would find in many areas of Europe.
