Motor Expo's good tidings point to uptick

Car bookings surge 23% as market heals.

Thailand's car market is showing signs of recovery, with consumers expressing more confidence about their long-term ability to buy new cars, says the organiser of Motor Expo 2017.

Inter-Media Consultant Co said the expo, which ended on Monday, saw 47,543 bookings of cars and motorcycles, up 17.8% from last year's level.

Of the total, 39,832 were cars booked at the event, representing 22.8% year-on-year growth. The figure was achingly close to the target of 40,000 set by the organiser and marked the first rise after bookings shrank in the past two years.

Honda saw the most bookings at 6,488 units, followed by Toyota (5,456), Mazda (5,015), Isuzu (4,479) and Mercedes-Benz (2,701).

Inter-Media vice-president Chalatchai Paphatphong said the motor show got a boost from the improving local car market. Sales volume in the January-September period was up 11.5% year-on-year at 620,715 units.

"We forecasts sales to grow 12-13% quarter-to-quarter in the last quarter of this year, with 240,000 units expected to be sold," Mr Chalatchai said. "The last quarter has myriad positive factors, especially people's purchasing power from their bonuses."
The Motor Expo organiser expects the domestic auto market to grow by 12% to 861,000 cars sold in 2017, registering growth for the first time in the past five years.

Mr Chalatchai said passenger cars were the largest segment at the show with 38.7% of total bookings, though that figure was down from 44.1% last year.

Bookings were dominated by Honda City, Honda Civic, Mazda 2, Honda Jazz and Nissan Note.

Sport utility vehicles (SUVs), including pickup passenger vehicles (PPVs), came second at 33.9%, up from 25.1% last year. They were led by MG ZS, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Mazda CX-5, Ford Everest and Honda HR-V.

Pickup trucks accounted for 17.9%, down from 20.3% last year. Ford Ranger was the most popular, followed by Isuzu D-Max, Toyota Revo, Mitsubishi Triton and Nissan Navara.

Mr Chalatchai said passenger cars, SUVs and PPVs were the most popular at the Motor Expo, making up more than 70% of bookings, because the show is normally held in an urban area and pickup trucks are more popular in rural areas.

There was no report of electric vehicle (EV) bookings because Nissan Leaf and China's Rayttle were unavailable for booking, while Kia's Soul EV was seen as too costly at 2.3 million baht.

The luxury segment was dominated by German giants Mercedes-Benz (2,701) and BMW (1,175), followed by Volvo (266), Audi (193) and Porsche (190).

"It indicates that some Thai buyers are more able to buy luxury cars and supercars, while their retail prices are not too high compared with other high-end cars in the mass segment," Mr Chalatchai said.

Of total bookings of 47,543 units, 7,711 were motorcycles, down 2.9% from 2016's Motor Expo, but that still beat the organiser's expectation of 7,000.

Thai brand GPX saw the highest bookings at 1,115 units, followed by Kawasaki (904), Ryuka (831), Yamaha (805) and Honda (741).

"Mid-size motorcycles of 250-400cc and big bikes above 400cc were still interesting to visitors, but overall sentiment did not grow at such a high pace as in previous years," Mr Chalatchai said.

The Motor Expo reported that the average car price at the latest event was up 8% at 1.27 million baht. Money circulation reached 52 billion baht, up 15.6%, while the number of visitors was 1.36 million, up 14.2%.

The all-time high for car bookings is still Motor Expo 2012's 85,904, propelled by the Yingluck Shinawatra government's first-time car buyer scheme.

Car bookings fell to 41,083 in 2013 and cratered at 32,422 in 2016.

And then there is this. I must really need new glasses as I cannot see the attraction of the biggest percentage of these girls. You also have to wonder at what some of their parents use for brains to allow their daughters to blatantly display their "assets".

Motor Expo: Cars or presenters?

Some people visit the Motor Expo to learn about the latest cars, or even buy them. Others, mainly men young and old, go there to check out the doll-like model presenters.
