Hua Hin police have said they intend to get tough on motorcyclists not wearing helmets in the holiday town.

But the plans wont come into force for more than two months.

From March 2nd chief Sitthichai Srisophacharoenrat said that helmet-less motorcyclists would get a warning.

But from May 1st they would be stopped and fined - for sure!

The chief was speaking as community leaders, the cops, military, local businesses and the general public took part in activities in the town to kick off the "Safe Riding - 100% Helmet Use" campaign.

A "warning", really? I guess only tourists on finos will get the 500 baht fine then, which explains why campaigns like this are only conducted in tourist towns.

So they've announced they'll start doing what they're paid to do in just over 2 months time :?

So what do they do in March and April? FFS, they should be doing it now :banghead:

Did they state what the definition of a helmet is?

I guess it must include police baseball caps and police peaked hats because we see plenty of police officers riding their motorcycles wearing them.

As usual not a case of enforcement but time to fill the coffers.

But why wait? It's an offence now - what are the BIB doing until 1 May?

Warnings only from 1 March - no tea money until 1 May? If that's the case, they aren't going to put too much effort into giving warnings - what's the incentive?

There are still signs around town that have been there for years warning of 100% helmet enforcement. Maybe someone's relative needed a contract for a new batch.

Looks like the pillion behind the BIB on the right hand side in Hi viz is adopting the usual Thai approach regarding 'Do as I say not as I do!'

If you fall under a 10 wheel truck with a helmet you might be a thinking vegetable.

   An Austrian friend of mine got fined 400 baht on Friday. He had been wearing his helmet, but took it off when he parked, and then decided to move the bike closer to the money exchange kiosk. While he was changing his money, a policeman approached him and waited patiently for him to finish, at which point he was told he had been seen riding without a helmet.

I wonder if he could perhaps get a refund given that it is not May yet. :D

As long as the poo lice don't bother the 10 in a pickup truck everything will be ok.

Do all 4 or 5 riders on the bike have to wear helmets?
