I give 250 if the service is OK. Not the yardage or reading the green but more of their attitude and being pleasant. I can see the yardage marker and can read my own green (poorly but that is part of the game). If they are grumpy and cannot keep up with the walk I give less and tell them why at the end. Plus, talking in the middle of a swing or on a mobile phone is a reason to reduce. Point is I tell them when they do it and at the end if I reduce the tip.

That is to be commended because the caddy is then in no doubt.

Bad story. The worst cheater I ever played with used give his caddy a extra 200b if he got more than 35pts. He never had bad lie in the rough!y

I agree with russ. Caddies dont like to get touched up but will tolerate it for a regular job.
I hate when I get a caddie who has a bad attitude and it can really affect the enjoyment of my round. I dont need them to give me yardages, read my putts or mark my ball. All I want them to do is be friendly, clean my clubs, fill my divots, rake the bunkers and keep up with me. I work as a caddy in the UK in the summer. We are all aware that we are working for a tip and do our best to give great service but a high proportion of the caddies here dont seem to understand this concept.
My last game at Lakeview, my caddie scowled when she found out I was walking. She then didnt follow me when I went to the putting green. When she caught up with me she asked me why I was walking when most of my group were riding carts! I should have requested to change her but I didnt. Her attitude had already aggravated me before even starting.
I played at Banyan twice last week and had the same caddie both times. She was a great girl with a great attitude. If you enjoy walking then caddie number 44 called Joy, is a great choice.
Caddies that use their phones is just a big no no. I wont tolerate that and will tell them if I see them. If we use our phones in the UK, while caddying, then we would never work again.
The golf courses around Hua Hin are trying to be top end courses and the caddies do need to be up to a certain standard.
300 baht is now considered the normal tip.

I have had caddies mention that they are available for other services in the evening. I politely refuse and we move on. As for reading lines advising clubs, I like it if they are very good or hopeless. If the former I take their advice. If the latter let them know thar I do not need advice.
I hate it when golfers blame the ccaddy for their own errors.

Did they say what services? Maybe they meant washing your car or cleaning your house or (most likely) giving you some golf lessons. :D

Caddies are on of the (many) reasons I quit the game here. I think they should be optional as I don't want one; in fact I would pay the caddy fee to not have any caddies in my group. I played golf for 40 years without a caddy and unless you're on the pro tour, I don't see a need for one. For me they are just an added distraction (not to mention the added expense of nearly $20 in an already expensive golf environment) when I need to be concentrating on my game.

But to answer the original question, I think the normal (and expected tip) is equal to the fee charged by the club (250 baht at a some courses, 300 at most).

We received the letter from the Country Club Phuket of increased caddie fee as of 1st of February 2014 of B 400 (tip to be recommended by them: B 400 for 18 holes/B 300 for 9 holes).

It could quickly catch-on here in HH also.

I'm too old to remember, or at least old enough that I can appreciate a good house cleaning just as much. :D

I totally agree with huahinfarang about caddies being optional. The golf courses really struggle to get enough trained caddies for the high season. So many rookie caddies at Lakeview just now and they can spoil the enjoyment of your round. They are on their phones, constantly talking and moving, driving carts as you are hitting etc. would it not be better to have a smaller core of caddies, who are good. Less hastle for the caddiemaster, constantly trying to train farmer girls and factory workers to be pro caddies. Not an easy job! All golfers would be happy - you want a caddie, you get a good caddie, you dont want a caddie, you dont take one. Just watch how much more money the clubs would make by selling more carts. Training caddies and kitting them out osts a lot of money. Some day they will work this out.

I've been saying similar about nurses in Thai hospitals for a few decades, but the count continues to increase. Pete

Back to golf....over here at Eastern Star and Emerald they tend to ask when you book if you are a walker or rider. Obvious they then list you with an appropriate caddie.

How does that work at Emerald Pete because I'm sure when last played there I first dropped off my bag and it was taken by a caddy, then parked and went to the registration to sign in for green fees etc and the same at Green Valley ?

The wife plays there frequently and she tells me when she calls to book, they ask. Same at ES. Pete
