Golf's Royal Trophy (Europe vs Asia) to be held in Hua Hin

Post by buksida »

The fifth Royal Trophy between Europe and Asia will be held at Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin from Jan 7-9, organisers said yesterday.

"The Royal Trophy is developing into one of the world's great sporting competitions and I hope it continues to grow for many years to come," said five-time Major champion Seve Ballesteros who created the event.

"I am confident that Black Mountain Golf Club will be a great host for the fifth edition of the championship and that the European and Asian teams will deliver spectacular golf and a great match."

Located in the outskirts of the old-charmed coastal resort town of Hua Hin, Black Mountain Golf Club's attractive championship golf course is set amongst huge valleys surrounded by jutting mountain ranges.

Featuring masterfully crafted fairways and greens, the Black Mountain layout promises to provide a serious challenge to the European and Asian golf elite.

The previous four editions were held at Amata Spring Country Club in Chon Buri.

The Ryder Cup-style competition features eight players each from teams of Europe and Asia.

The winners get stewardship of the solid-silver trophy donated by His Majesty the King.

2 world class events at Black Mountain in the space of a few weeks, fantastic for Hua Hin and a testament to the work done by the team there.
I am sure there will be great crowds out there to watch the Asian version of the Ryder Cup, on a course which has undergone massive improvements over the past year and that will be a fun course for matchplay.
Now if Seve could make it to the tournament that would be really special. :thumb:

I noticed that all the potholes have been numbered on the road from town, well into three digits I imagine, looks like they are going to get a make over.

Colin Montgomerie will remain captain for Europe's defence of the Royal Trophy matchplay contest against Asia early next year, organisers said on Tuesday.

The Scotsman, who led the Europeans to victory in this year's Ryder Cup against the United States, will resume his role as player-captain when the contest against Asia moves to the Thai beach town of Hua Hin in January.

Montgomerie agreed to lead the side at the request of his friend and five-times major winner Seve Ballesteros, who founded the Royal Trophy five years ago and steered Europe to victory as captain in the first two editions.

This year's contest in Chonburi was a thriller and came down to the last stroke of the game, when Swede Henrik Stenson holed the winning put to earn the Europeans an 8 ½ - 7 ½ win after a fierce contest in the deciding singles.

"I'm certain we will face a strong Asian challenge but we will be prepared to play our best and to compete with great determination," Montgomerie said in a statement.

"I'll be retaining the role of captain and player of the European Team at the Royal Trophy. I enjoyed the dual role in the previous edition," he said.

Ballesteros is battling back to health after being diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumour in 2008 and has undergone four operations and chemotherapy.

The 53-year-old Spaniard said he would stay in regular touch with the European team during the contest at the Black Mountain Golf Club, either by phone or in person.

"I need to continue to take care of my health and it will depend on the advice of my doctors," Ballesteros told Reuters in an e-mail.

"If I cannot be in Thailand for the tournament, I'll be following on television and I'll certainly be in very close contact with the captains and with our team on the ground."

He said the fifth edition would be a "remarkable encounter between a very confident Europe and a very determined Asia".

Naomichi "Joe" Ozaki will captain Asia for the fourth successive edition and has recalled Japanese sensation Ryo Ishikawa to his team.

Europe have won the Royal Trophy three times but suffered a surprise 10-6 defeat to Asia in 2009 under Jose Maria Olazabal. The fifth edition takes place from Jan. 7-9, 2011.

We normally go to this and unlike most other tournaments, there is an entry fee. Last year, I think, it was 1,000 baht but there are always loads of free tickets knocking around. We got ours free at the observer last year. Delighted it's coming to Hua Hin.

Just checked their website for 20011 and as above, 1,000 per day or 2,000 for a three day ticket.

Royal Trophy teams

Europe: Colin Montgomerie (Scotland) Edoardo Molinari, Matteo Manassero (both Italy) Johan Edfors, Peter Hanson, Henrik Stenson (all Sweden)
Thomas Bjorn (Denmark), Rhys Davies (Wales?)

Asia: Ryo Ishikawa, Yuta Ikeda, Shunsuke Sonoda (all Japan), Kim Kyung-tae, Noh Seung-yul (all South Korea), Liang Wenchong (China),
Thongchai Jaidee (Thailand), Jeev Milkha Singh (India)

Only one Thai? I can see crowds being down on previous years.

Look out for throngs of Koreans and Japanese in Hua Hin and five hour golf rounds! Hope not.

Can anyone advise if there is going to be any buses or transport being laid on to take visitors to Black Mountain??

Any ideas or advise would be appreciated as we are coming over from Bangkok by bus for the competition and don't have any of our own transport.
