Ao Manao/Wing 5 Golf

Post by father »

Just in case anyone is interested:

The golf for falangs is only 320 baht. You can play nine holes in the morning and come back and play 9 more in the afternoon, or 18 and 18. You pay for the day not just 18 holes. Pull carts are an additional 20 baht. No caddies.
There is also a driving range. 20 baht for 40 balls. The balls are getting worn so you hit a few that fly a bit strange.
They don't officially open until 9am but if you want to play earlier you just go out and pay when you are done. You can get balls for the range before 9am too and again just pay when you come back in.
They have a small covered area for drinks after and they are very inexpensive.
The course layout is actually quite good but unfortunately the conditions aren't. It is rougher than Thanarat. The greens are a bit rougher too. If you stray off the fairways there's about an 80% chance you won't find your ball. Hit your old balls off the tee and then swap them with better balls to hit to the greens.
The way to play is just "bump" your ball to some better grass. Still good fun to be had and the price certainly reflects the condition.
There is actually a nice driving range called "Three Bays Driving Range" just across the highway from the Tesco/Lotus if you are looking for one. It has decent balls and auto ball dispensers. Runs about 25 baht per tray of 40 but have a special on most of the time: 5 trays for 100 baht. I can't hit that many balls myself. It is lit and the posted hours are 6:45am until 9pm but can be a bit hit and miss.

Good info - thanks. Is that the only course you played there? Are there alternatives?

It's the only course in the area. You'd have to go north to Hua Hin area for some better golf. The closest from here is Thanarat Military Course. It is 18 holes but also pretty rough. I've played Black Mountain, Banyan, and Sea Pines there and all were very nice.

I am in Hua Hin and have played every course in the area at least once, including Dtanarat.

I like Prachuab and have visited Ao Manao itself but not the course - it is helpful for knowing whether dragging the clubs down there next time is worth the effort. Thanks.

Back for the winter and played the course two days ago. Worse conditions than last year. Worth 100 baht at best right now. Too bad it is so poorly looked after as the layout isn't that bad.

Played the course yesterday again. In better shape than 2 years ago but not much better. I still don't putt on the greens as they are bumpy and slow, however they are better than usual. Par 3 tee boxes hard to find some grass. I use it as a practice course only. If you aren't a serious golfer then it's ok I guess. Just move your ball on the fairway and find a clump of grass as there are a lot of bare/sandy spots.

Thanks for the update. I've been out of the game for a few years and had been wondering about playing at Wing 5 to re-build some confidence in my game away from the crowds and caddies. Will give it a shot next time I'm at Ao Manao.

Was just hitting balls at the range and see they now have caddies. 200 baht for 9 holes. 400 baht for 18 holes. $$$ That is the foreigner rate. 1/2 that for Locals. Don't think they will get many takers.
