Connecting flights, immigration and baggage

Post by buksida »

Forgive me if this question sounds stupid but I've never actually done it before ...

Want to get a flight to Malaysia then another flight about 2 hours later to Indonesia.

Do we have to go through immigration? What happens to checked in luggage, can you collect and avoid immigration and go straight to the next plane?

A rundown on the procedure would be appreciated from those frequent flyers!

If you are stopping in Malaysia (i.e. KL) only to make a connecting flight there is normally no reason to go through immigration in Malaysia unless you have a lot of time between flights and want to leave the airport

In the departure airport (i.e. Swampy) you will present your tickets (showing Indonesia as your final destination) and your baggage will be checked all the way to your final destination. If you are using the same airline for both flights they will usually provide you with boarding passes for both flights.

If you are using two different airlines, then at KL proceed directly from your flight to the transit area. Here you will find the transit desks and can obtain your next boarding pass. You do not pass through immigration.

Ok, cheers, yes its Air Asia for both. I'm trying to avoid checked baggage but y'know what its like traveling with wife and kids - virtually impossible!

Might want to give yourself a bit more than a couple hours though just as safety net and to ensure your bags make the connecting flight. A couple hours might sound like a long time but it just takes a small delay at your departure point to screw-up your travel plans.
If you can travel with the same carrier then this would be the preferred option as Bristolian has first mentioned. This way you will be issued both boarding cards and your baggage will be routed straight to your final destination.

Booked. :thumb:

Time between flights is 2 hours 40, should be enough.

For most flights Air Asia is a point to point carrier which means your luggage will not automatically be checked through to your next flight and you will have to collect it and recheck it in for your next flight. This is all very easy at KL as Air Asia has its own terminal but you will need to check with the air line whether your bags will automatically be transferred or not

Recently went through KL on the way to Perth using Malaysian Airlines. Only had an hour but the bags made it (whatever index the agent uses says this is enough).

We have flown thru KL Air Asia a few times and as stated it's a point to point airline only.In fact the airline leaving Thailand is a separate company altogether to the one in KL altho they fly under the same name and logo. Even tho we were on transit to or from Oz we had to visit the immigration desk then collect our luggage as we had to actually walk out of the arrivals of the LCA( low cost airlines) terminal and traverse the car park( technically we had entered Malaysia) and only to then enter the departures building next door.
Beware this terminal has to be one of the most disorganized around as when you front up to the booking desk the attendants are just so cool, so cool in fact they the even have their make up mirrors out on the desks and they have a habit of just getting up, and without explanation, wonder of for breaks, mobile calls or whatever leaving the bewildered throngs racing off to the next line and guess what goes on there.Talk about the Thais being casual this mob beats them hands down.

Starting to worry now ... you say we all have to actually go through immigration and into Malaysia, then back into the airport again for check in?

If that is the case the 2 hours 40 may not be enough ...

When you booked it did you book it Bangkok to Indonesia (Jakarta?) ie one
booking, or did you make two separate bookings ie Bangkok-K.L, then K.L-Indonesia?

If the latter then yes you will have to clear immigration, pick up your bags, and check in again.

I found this out a while ago when I booked Christchurch (NZ) to K.L.
then K.L to Bangkok in two bookings.

The following trip I booked Christchurch to Bangkok (via K.L) and it was a different story.

Two separates, there was no way to book it in one.

Buksi , We are talking only a few minutes walk between the exit of arrivals to the entry of departures. As you leave the door hang a right and wander along the footpath of the car park and you will find departures. Btw the airport food is crap and expensive too.

unless your flight is delayed leaving BKK you will have plenty of time. Air Asia is all organised for connecting flights, by the time you clear immigration your baggage should be waiting for you and all you have to do is go to your new check in desk and then walk through to departures and back through immigration this whole process has always taken us less than an hour. Arrival and departures are all in one building and everything is clearly signposted. As already mentioned the food at the airport is dire and expensive we usually just pre-order a sandwich 90 baht for the flight from BKK. It is always better to pre-order you food with air asia as firstly it is cheaper and secondly on some flights they sell out of the snacks very quickly. There is often a long walk from your plane to the terminal and if it is raining you could well get a bit wet although most of it is covered but gets very wet underfoot.

Cheers - yes, well aware how bad and shockingly overpriced airport food is! The concern is that going through immigration and all that security shit twice will eat up the time - it took bloody ages getting out of Swampy!
