You can do it in the same way as two of our members did it. By train.

A little off the wall but…..You could also do it by cargo ship. Many have very good accommodation for paying passengers. The only issues are time it takes (possible delays) and of course cost, for a sailing that will take several weeks

You may be able to pick a containership from Lag Shabang I know The French line CMA-CGM take paying passengers.

Old Man: As others have suggested, you could try what we did last year. If you, or anyone else, would like a copy of the Excel planning sheet for our trip, you're very welcome. Just email me at ajarnlinda@gmail.com and I'll send you the sheet. Going overland does involve a lot of pre-planning, and it's important to buy the train tickets in advance for certain routes, but boy is it worth it. Timing is crucial, as some trains only run twice a week. Both Mr.VS and I are happy to help/advise anyone who's thinking of doing such a trip.

In the old days of general cargo ships many companies had what was termed a "packet licence" to carry a small number of passengers. These ships would call at many small ports making for an interesting trip.

With modern container ships it would not be a very interesting way to travel. They mostly run non stop to major ports around the wold, and if they call at a port along the way it will only be for a stop of a few hours, which does not leave enough time for shore excursions.

Could certainly agree with Nereus on this. I looked at travelling back to the UK from China/Hong Kong etc. and basically looking at the "small print", yes you had a decent cabin, yes you were provided with decent food..... no you could not always go on deck (for safety). It was a case of room, canteen (or should we call it what it really is.... ). The other point to note is that there are very few people/seamen(?)/crew on these ships who do not necessarily speak English. Could be an extremely boring few weeks......

Oh... and Internet????

[EDIT] Personally I'd love now to be able to do what VS and Mr VS did - I followed their trip and it was fascinating. BUT as VS says, it must take a massive amount of planning. I for one would wholeheartedly take up the offer of getting their spreadsheet for their planning of the journey.
