Flights at Christmas period are always at premium pricing. To be sure of the flight you want you need to book by latest end August.

In my experience prices never drop at this peak period. I stand to be corrected by the exceptions

Certainly agree that prices will not drop. A mate of mine booked his late April/early May and got a steal at under £500 return.

When I used to travel over Christmas, I used to get a flight leaving before the 9th December when the prices increased for the Christmas period, not sure if that's still the case?

The flight my mate takes is over the Christmas period BUT returns before New Year. He tells me the prices change dramatically if you stay over the New Year also. His flight this time is something like leaving the UK on the 7th and returning on the 28th.

I flew one way to the U.S. from Bangkok last Christmas and got a really cheap short notice seat by flying on Christmas Day. Any other day for 2 weeks either direction was double but it seems the day itself is not a big travel day so seats are cheaper. Not only that, travelling that direction I didn't really miss Christmas; the flight left early on Christmas morning and arrived in North Carolina on Christmas afternoon!

I spent last Christmas and New Year in Hua Hin. My first time as I usually travel mid November or late May. I have never paid more than £560 travelling at these times usually flying with Etihad via Abu Dhabi or Emirates via Dubai from Manchester. However the cheapest flight I was able to get then was a shocking £1053 flying with Cathay Pacific on their new route from Manchester via Hong Kong. Etihad and Emirates were asking for between £1500/£1600 which is ridiculous. I booked almost the 10 months in advance and the prices never came down once.
If you manage to get a flight under £900 at that time of year I think you are doing very, very well. Good luck.
