Side Effects of Frontline and Frontline Plus

Post by sateeb »

I have noticed that recently my dog has become very lethargic and sleeps all day. She is a 10 month old Pug who previously was full of energy. I started applying Frontline about 3 months ago and I have come to the conclusion that it coincides with the use of this product.

Today I "Googled side effects of Frontline and came up with this discussion....

http://www.amazon.com/Possible-side-eff ... B00008DFGY.

Has anyone else had similar experiences with their pets?

I for one am going to stop using Frontline for a while and see if their is any improvement in her health.

Symptoms include, lethargy, shortness of breath and a loss of appetite.

Yes, I think something has changed with the product unfortunately. I used it extensively on many dogs in the late 80's and 90's and I never noticed any adverse reaction at all. With my two Golden Retrievers now, who are heavy weights and get the 40+kilo dose, they have heavy breathing and are lethargic for about 3 hours after their monthly dosage. It passes after that and they are again normal. They're only 13 months old so I've only put it on them for the past few months but I've now seen the same reaction 3 times. That's enough for me. Back to powder and more frequent baths with flea/tick shampoo when needed.

As you pointed out the web is full of blogs about bad reactions to Frontline. Hopefully their mad scientists will look into it and change something. Pete

PS: I've yet to research if the Frontline we buy here is manufactured in Thailand or any other nearby Asian country. That could be the problem if there is bad QC.

EDIT: I see no problems with Heart Guard and never had. It's a good idea to give that (beefy cube) every month to protect against heart worm. Heart worm will do your dog in more quickly and severely than any flea or tick will. In the West they always test for the presence of heart worm before you begin giving the monthly preventative medicine. Here, I've been told by two Vets that the blood tests for it are not conclusive so they recommend you just start giving the medication. Perhaps BS but since I started mine on it when they were pups, slim chance they already had the worm in their system. My understanding is that for older dogs who have never had the medication and are started on it and already have heart worm, it can be fatal.

I've never noticed any side effects when using frontline other than it doesn't seem to be as effective as it once was.

In South Africa they have something they inject and that actually stops the breeding cycle of ticks and fleas but it seems you don't get it here.

Here in Hua-Hin we tried everything.............Frontline, shampoo, powders and sprays, but the ticks remained. Then we got a few chickens..............ticks have now been driven to extinction. Not a single tick (or anything else small enough to be eaten) seen for more than a year.....lol.

We use something like that on our three dogs up in Issan and it's very effective. I don't remember the trade name but we get it from one of those agricultural suppliers who sell medication and suppliments for livestock. I just buy a small bottle and syringe with a few needles and one of the farmers does the injections as he'e been trained to inject animals under some agricultural scheme.

Don't what it is, but the vet comes to the house every 2 months and injects our dogs - only 300 Baht including home visit. If you're interested, ask on Wednesday, and i'll give you his details.

I thought that was normal for all Thai dogs. Are you sure that she isn't just growing up?

Cheers BB...I discovered that she was suffering from an abnormal liver count. I have since used Frontline plus on both of my Pugs without any abnormal side effects. The bi monthly visit from the vet I would suspect to be Heartworm injections.

Please DO NOT put any Frontline product on your pet. :( It causes death, seizures and terrible side effects for some dogs. Rudy is 7 and developed seizures after having Frontline Plus. I immediately took him to the vet who did all kinds of tests to have all of them come back negative. He had several seizures after and one Sunday had 5 seizures in 3 hours. We took him to the emergency pet hospital. They kept him overnight. The next day he stayed overnight at our vets. After several more seizures, the vet put him on Phenobarbital. I asked the vet if it could be related to Frontline. He said no that Frontline was a safe drug. After doing some research on the computer and seeing how many other dogs had the same problems I knew that it was the Frontline. (Now my vet agrees that it probably was the Frontline) So needless to say we still have Rudy (thank God) but he is still on Phenobarbital and probably will be for the rest of his life thanks to Frontline Plus. I am 65 years old, and I have never witnessed anything as heartbreaking as seeing Rudy in a seizure. I thought for sure that I was going to lose him. We have to stop Frontline from selling this poison to us to use on our pets. We have started a group on Facebook that is planning on doing this. If you have had problems with this poison, please go to our Facebook page Frontline/Frontline Plus a Neuro-Toxic Poison and tell your story. Be sure to like this page. We have to stop them soon before we lose any more precious pets. Thank you.

Being hit with a shovel causes death, seizures and terrible side effects for some dogs too. I hardly think this factless troll post based on 'something you found on the Internet' is something we should be overly concerned with. Scouring the net for stories that back up your stories must be exhaustive...oh, except this story goes to show that Frontline had nothing to do with the dog's malaise.

Maybe you should try to give your dog Frontline Plus and maybe you will be lucky and nothing will happen but are you willing to take that chance? I am telling you there are plenty of issues that back me up. Go to Amazon and other sites if you don't believe me. What? Are you working for Frontline or are you a vet? You are the only kind of people who think like this. Your head is in the sand. Good Luck to you and your dog.
