Hua Hin to Samui
Hua Hin to Samui
Hi members, I'm looking at the possibilities of going to Samui from HH in December and wondered what the best way to travel was. I know I can go up to BK and get a flight but I would rather look at alternative options including train and perhaps driving. I'll be traveling with my wife and wee 3 year old daughter.
All tips, information or advice appreciated.

The Lomprayah bus/boat trip is probably the easiest (though it will take all day).
Get the bus in HH at 08.30, get into Chumphon at 12.00, depart on the cat at 13,00 which then goes to Tao, Pha-ngan and finally Samui at about 17.00.

If you want to drive you need to go to Don Sak (an hour past Surat-thani) then take the drive-on ferry which takes about an hour and fifteen minutes.

The easiest way is with the Lomprayah bus from Hua Hin to Chomphon and then continue to Samui with the Lomprayah ferry.
The bus leaves HH at 8.30 a.m., ferry arrives Koh Samui 4.20 p.m. or
leave HH midnight, arrive KS 11.30 a.m.

You can reserve your tickets at our Booking Office at Crepes & Cruises near the Fishing Pier or by calling us direct or by via email.

Agree with the above posters. If you want to drive you are heading through Chumphon to Surat Thani and then take the ferry from Donsak to Samui. Did this myself a couple of times and it's pretty easy.
Driving time to Surat Thani is about 4 hours and to Donsak about 5 hours.

Re: Hua Hin to Samui
I recommend you rent yourself a car, it is a nice steady 5 hour drive to the Donsak Ferry Terminal and then about 1 hour ,15/30 minutes on the ferry, (I usually try and get myself a foot massage) and then of the ferry into the traffic chaos of Samui, but the advantage is you have the flexibility of having your own transport and can plan accordingly.

Re: Hua Hin to Samui
Thanks guys this is really helpful as I will have a car while I'm there and I am considering driving down. So it's roughly about 6-7 hours to get to Samui including the ferry, is that right?
What's the driving license situation as I have heard mixed reports? I have been stopped a few times in HH and once produced an Indonesian License and they just move me on and same when I produced a British license but seen on the forum here you are meant to have an international one.
Is it worth considering the train as an option and if so what's the transfers etc like?
Cheers

Give yourself at least 7 hours to get to your destination, forget about the train, especially with a youngster.

Only if you have plenty of time on your hands. The easiest and most enjoyable is the high speed cat others have mentioned. You can always rent a car once you get there, or even one of those Suzuki jeeps for under a thousand per day.
Enjoy your trip

Re: Hua Hin to Samui
You can take an overnight train but it leaves you at Surat Thani and then you have to get a boat to the "wrong" side of Samui and be at the mercy of the taxi mafia.

Re: Hua Hin to Samui
Lompraya is a good option. The boat is fast and smooth and the bus has plenty of space. Why not make a stop at Koh Tao or Koh Phangan. Two beautiful islands.

A friend has booked his ticket on line for Friday a.m. but is not sure where the bus leaves from (such irrelevant info not on website!).buksida wrote:The Lomprayah bus/boat trip is probably the easiest (though it will take all day).

Re: Hua Hin to Samui
Has it changed then? Every time I have used it this year it's left from the new Lomprayah office on Petkasem road, it also tells you on the confirmation ticket they give you when you book.
Re: Hua Hin to Samui
That's where friends have departed from previously, and I've often seen buses waiting there. However, your information is probably more current than mine.
Sorry DM. The office is a few hundred yards South of the Tessebahn lights.
