Has anybody ever been there? Recently, preferably. Any recommendations?

Nobody? I'm going there on the 1st of December for 10 days ( by the courtesy of University of Helsinki to visit local schools in Santiago.) Then I have three days on my own when I can explore the surroundings of Santiago. Planning to go to Valparaiso and a Vineyard (don't know which one, yet) so need recommendations.

Let's put this up to stimulate conversation perhaps....and see where everything is. Pete

EDIT: If I had the time I probably would head to the far southern tip which I assume is the Chile side of Patagonia.

One thing I haven't researched is if Chile and Argentina ever went to war? What a massive border to defend and doesn't appear too much trouble for Argentina to take a bite all the way to the sea and cut off an entire chunk of the country. Pete

Never been there, BG, but try and read some Isabel Allende before you go.
Sounds like a fascinating country. Just stay off the local hooch and remember that it's a bit machismo over there.
And it's got the driest place in the world. Some desert where it hasn't rained for a very long time.

Pete, I think the Andes makes it quite difficult to have a war between these two neighbours.
Andes Mountains:
This toothy-edged mountain system, some 4,500 miles (7,240 km) in length, extends from the southern tip of South America all the way to Panama.

It's the source of most major rivers on the continent, and its many ranges include dozens of peaks that reach over 20,000 ft; the highest point being Aconcagua in Argentina, at 22,384 ft. (6,960m). It's also home to some of the planet's largest volcanoes, and in the far south along the coast of Chile, large glaciers and ice sheets are commonplace.

Lomu, surely you can recall I prefer watering holes to dry places.

Read the CIA WORLD FACT BOOK for background info on Chile (and for any other nation). You may also wish to catch up on Chile's history of dictatorship, Standard Electric's possible role in the alleged CIA involvement in the killing of president Allende, etc, etc. Mr. Plum can probably expand on this....
And do have a nice trip.

Hi BG - I've been hanging on because I thought you might get some direct replies from people who have been. It seems not! My brother goes quite regularly and was there in August. He always spends 2 or 3 days in Santiago on the way to Easter Island, but has stayed longer and travelled way up North in Chile last year. My sister in law has friends in Santiago and used to live there.
I'll ask him for any recommendations, tips etc and get back to you asap. If you want I can put you in touch with him by e mail.

Valparaiso or Vina del mar not far from Santiago, puerto monte, Punta Arenas in the south. Been about 7 years since I was there but I loved it. Might be more expensive than you first think. I stayed mostly in best westerns and other mid-range priced hotels.

Thanks, Mags and everyone else as well. I only have about three days of free time so I think, I'll just have time to a trip to Valparaiso, a visit to a vineyard and maybe a little bit of something else. The rest of the time I'll be visiting primary schools in Santiago area and taken around by the University of Santiago.. So Mags, if your relatives know something nice that can be done in one day, I'd be interested to know.
