Travelling across Russia by train
It's that time of the year, and we're taking a much less adventurous trip to finally end up in the UK. This year we're flying to Vladivostok and then hopping on and off trains as we travel across to St. Petersburg (3 weeks). Then we'll catch a plane to Edinburgh. Henry will be writing a blog en route, so if you want to know what we're up to you can find out at http://henryandlinda2015.weebly.com/ .

Certainly look forward to the Blog, the previous trip's was great reading!! ..
If you haven't been to St Petersburg before, you're in for a treat! I was lucky enough to have worked a few hours train ride from there a couple of years back and visited a few times over the weekend break. A truly beautiful city with a host of great bars and restaurants.... some a tad more expensive than others! Funnily enough it would have been around this time of year I visited - get a hotel with thick curtains, or take "sleep masks" - summer time has something like 19 hrs of sunlight!!
A great deal to see and the museums are well worth a visit.
Safe and happy trip! (To be honest, I don't mind you forgetting your F1 picks... )

The value of the local currency, ruble, is very low at the moment so you should be able to enjoy many good meals and get very good hotels for relatively inexpensive prices. My brother just went to Viborg (about 65 km from my hometown and 1,5 hours form St. Petersburg) and they had a good meal in a very nice restaurants for four persons, including the wine for €40 that's €10 per person. As you will be visiting many Russian cities, I think you can enjoy these prices everywhere you stop.

Re: Travelling across Russia by train
Just as an aside, one place that was a favorite of mine for breakfast (although brunch/lunch/dinner also available) was a place called "Bushe" - cracking Russian bread and decent strong coffee to kick the day off. Wonderful pastries for tea time also!!
If you haven't already booked accommodation, a friend was staying at "Apartments on Lensoveta 25/28" and graciously allowed me to stay there on my weekends away. Self-catering, basic, but clean, close to the Metro and airport - from memory, around 400 Euro per week. Self-catering always the way to go in my book...
Anyway, have fun!

Re: Travelling across Russia by train
I imagine that three weeks on a Russian train is a reasonable preparation for a holiday in Scotland!
