Sirindhorn Museum near Kalasin

Post by Big Boy »

After the disappointment of the Dinosaur Park, we drove on to the Sirindhorn Museum. It was a couple of Km from the Dinosaur Park, and easily identifiable by the sign on the mountainside.

Plus other lower level signs.

We drove into the ample car park, and wandered past more dinosaur figures (OMG, not another dinosaur park I thought).

We entered the building, and Thailand being Thailand, there was a dual pricing regime. 40 Baht for Thais and 100 Baht for Farangs.

Once inside, this was the real deal. Fossils, skeletons, many interactive activities and a theater.

There was even a look into the laboratory/workshop.

I really enjoyed this museum (and I'm not normally a museum person). IMHO this attraction is suitable for all ages, and it is even wheelchair friendly. Yes, there is a dual pricing policy, but not to the extent that it should put people off. It definitely got the thumbs up from me.

Are any of the information signs in English? I get so frustrated going into places and the only information is in Thai. My wife then gets frustrated with me for continually asking her what the information says.

Does no one in Thailand realize that tourism is important and signage needs to be in other languages not just Thai.

Today I went to Wat Huay Mongkol and was approached by another English couple who asked if I knew who the monk was and why there are three headed elephant statues, naturally no signage in English, Chinese or anther language.

Good question Steve. My gut feeling is yes, because I wasn't asking my wife or son what this was or what that was.

I've just gone back to check the photos I took (many more than posted). Any with signs in them, I've expanded, and each one had Thai first, and English afterwards. I'll use a basic example to demonstrate:

So this museum at least has got it right :thumb:
