LOL - sale of alcohol was banned nationwide for the last 2 days, but you found a way around itHHTel wrote:"I hope they have better catering, very disapointing and beer on my train!"
Alcohol is banned on all trains in Thaiand. You can't even take your own - if found, it will be confiscated. Having said that, Railway employees have been seen drinking openly on these trains and it was drunken employees which led to the ban!

A little different BB. Alcohol was banned for consumption 11th July 2014. The reason was of an incident when a poor girl was beaten and raped and thrown off the train just south of HH. The aggressor was an employee of SRT but the knee-jerk reaction was to ban alcohol on all forms of transport.
Getting a drink on 'Buddha days is a completely different scenario.

If you say so - both are crimes.

Only a crime to sell/buy alcohol, not a crime to drink it.
It is a crime to drink alcohol on a train!

Re: First look at Thailand's sleek new express trains
I always found it amusing on the HH - Butterworth route... the guy who came around to takes orders for table service clearly knows the regulars. As soon as the train passed the border into Malaysia we was coming around offering beers to those that he thought would want one.
Considering the respective images that Thailand and Malaysia have when it comes to alcohol consumption.
I speak in the past tense because the last couple of times I've done the route, we've changed onto an express train after hitting the border, which doesn't have any form of catering.

Re: First look at Thailand's sleek new express trains
I've just seen some publicity photos on the net. I'd need to buy 2 tickets just for me
When I saw the original photos, I assumed the seats were like the UK's Inter-City 1st Class seats.

^^ That looks like a sleeper carriage and the seat would be for one person.

The photo labelled second class seating car is obviously a sleeper - the upper bunks have been lowered to sleeping positions.Nereus wrote:There is a bunch of photos here:

Re: First look at Thailand's sleek new express trains
That is definitely a sleeper but as you say BB, why put 2 small people in a single seat. Maybe the photo crew and stooges just didn't know!Big Boy wrote:Why publicise with 2 SMALL people sitting in it then? Re: First look at Thailand's sleek new express trains
Actually, if you look through the link provided by Nereus the seating in the 2nd class sleeping car is the same as the seating in the 2nd class seating car.

The pics are completely misleading. The pic that is marked as a 2nd class seating car is in fact a sleeper car!
