The only songthaew I'm aware of that goes close is the lime green one and that does a uturn right at the entrance to the airport and heads back into town.
The orange one should do the same, but then it will enter Soi 10 and use the canal road to town.

I've just been out to the new bus station to buy tickets for some visitors.

This is what it says on the window:

The day before yesterday (Tuesday) the shuttle bus was free. Stopped at a few hotels, the clock tower and the "old" bus station.

The wife used the new facility today, it's very good but a little out of the way if you do not have transport. Adequate parking but not sure if you can leave the car there all day. 4 hours to BKK airport

Caught the airport bus yesterday and came back today. From Soi 80 did a deal with a Victory Monument mini van for 30 Baht to drop me out there. On the way back was planning to use the shuttle bus which was quoted as 30 Baht to the Clock Tower with No stops or 100 Baht to your hotel. As it turned out met a friend on the bus and his partner met him at the depot and offered me a free ride home.

PARKING--important for one day trips, is there any parking for cars or for m/bikes?

There was plenty of parking (as much as the old bus station) there the day I went, and no signs stating there was any restriction. However, whether there were any restrictions............................

This makes absolute sense, I arrived three or four years ago on a sonkran Saturday afternoon. The journey time from the airport to Hua Hin was as it always has been. One mile out from the Clock Tower it was bedlam, 1-2 mph, just after the clock tower 20 mins later I got off the bus much to the dismay of the coach attendant and driver. 100 bht later they were my best friends .

Caught a Green 10b bus this morning to go and book tickets on the airport bus out at their new depot. The bus did a u turn outside HH airport gates and I got off there. From there i walked 5 mins Nth to the Koncept shop where the bus depot is beside. You can see the 'Koncept' sign when you get off the bus.
Ideal way for overnight stays or day trippers to Bkk etc.

Not without risk though, walking 5 minutes each way on the hard shoulder of the main North/South highway.

Slightly off topic, but couldn't agree more BB. I've chanced that walk many times now just to reach the new P. Office where my box number was relocated over a year ago.
It's a lovely walk in the country - not. And I've never tried it at night!!
