Is Living Here Difficult for You?
Re: Is Living Here Difficult for You?
Being out of the UK labour market for ten years is a long time. One thing to consider if thinking of leaving Thailand and coming back here is the country is flooded with East European labour.

Agreed, apart from those in my home village, who have never been to London.prcscct wrote:I think except for very few, everyone gets bored of the places they live for a long time. We're creatures of change!
I don't think many people enjoy the jobs they do. No matter where they live. I can't imagine being a Civil Servant. Who would want 'servant' in their job title?
The restless, the adventurous and the free-spirited become bored with lack of stimulation and variety. Instead of trying to put down roots, they should go with their natural 'flow' and take off for new adventures. They, like Richard, will eventually settle down.
Let us know when you quit GLC. Don't leave it too long. New opportunities will arise! Then when you have experienced other cultures we'll see you when you get back, after realizing Thailand isn't so bad after all.

Re: Is Living Here Difficult for You?
I think Thailand attracts a lot of 'Rambo' or 'Roughneck Cowboy' types that enjoy living rough/hard and they do this country no favors. Thailand desperately needs to improve the standard of living and quality of life here for all people and does not need 'Rambo Roughneck Cowboys' hindering and obstructing that progress.
Thailand could also use a mega dose of commonsense, but you could say that about most countries in the world today.

I'm so glad i dont have any serious money invested here, i feel bad for those that do, especially those with business depending on high visitor numbers.
Re: Is Living Here Difficult for You?
I've lived in Thailand a little over 13 years now and am still generally content with it but it [Thailand] has changed a lot in that time (some things for the better, some not so) and so have some sections of Thai society too. Many societies, including Thailand's, are becoming more superficially greedy, less tolerant and more indifferent with individuals being more self-centered than ever before..........plus kids with their over developed self-entitlement to so much and the dwindling of respect for others (I'll stop there on this one).
Thing is, nowhere is perfect and 'the grass is always greener' etc. Living in foreign countries/being an expat is not for everyone and isn't always easy (especially in such an exotic place as this). Ultimately you have to find peace within yourself....wherever you go......and until you make that peace with yourself then you will be plagued by such nagging thoughts and questions often. In the end you have to realise that little in life really matters other than quality of life and you should just persue what, who and where make you relaxed/happy.
Being an expat you need to learn to be pragmatic and all good pragmatists know how to compromise to get on with things.
@the OP,
Seems to me GLC that you might need a change of scenery, even if it is within Thailand. In mean, Samut Sakhon for 5-10 years........really?
Working in Nakhon Nowhere at your age will get to you if you are not married or of an older persuasion and want a less intense environment and I doubt very much that that place is the end of the road for you. If I was single and your age then I'd go get myself a job somewhere there was much to do and a good time to be had. Or, go to BBK and rake in some cash at a good place, then make a move to what/where you really want to go/be later after you have more time to consider things in a new environment.
One of the things about living in a foreign country for so long is that you end up seeing the truth about a place and understanding what it's really like for those that are indigenous and their attitudes towards you, each other and many other things. Sometimes when you see past the charade that is presented to the brief visitors and see the beast behind it all for what it really is, then it is not always so palatable in many ways...even if the truth. You just have to understand it, see the good and bad and not have any expectations as they inevitably lead to disappointments. This is why the apologists on forums always make me laugh as they obviously know shit....but denial is a lot more comfortable than truth for many poor souls.
Working in far eastern countries is not for the faint hearted and finding an acceptable establishment to work in that you are allowed to operate properly in without needless interference or pettiness is paramount to your mental survival and situational contentment.
Maybe you just need to shake things up a bit and refresh your experience man.......as going back to the UK after so long would be much more of a mind bend than staying out here.

Freedom of the labour market within the EU works both ways, there are many countries in Europe where there is work available to people prepared to go and get it and the language problem isn't as bad as it used to be.kendo wrote:Being out of the UK labour market for ten years is a long time. One thing to consider if thinking of leaving Thailand and coming back here is the country is flooded with East European labour.

GLC life is what you make of it. I hear you re the frustration, but a lot of it is miscommunication. Still happens even if you have a good command of the language. Take two steps back, deeeep breath. ..
Been here myself for (wait for it ... ) 26 years as a permanent resident. My wife and I raised the kids by ourselves; no granny or other such 'help' so had to go troppo in many ways. You get to see how the other side lives. We both were holding down jobs as well so a lot of time juggling at the time. Now it's more juggling what's left in the wallet at the end of the day.
Actually quite similar to most everywhere else, except for the place.
So ... difficult? No. Would I leave? No. Too much has changed where I come from. Besides, there's a lot to still discover in Thailand.
So just chill out a bit, at your age it shouldn't be difficult to take a short break from things, no?
Norseman, I hear you re the way HH had changed, remember chatting at the first HHAD gathering in '02 at JW's, went back a couple of weeks ago to find out had changed ownership ...
BTW stayed in Chiangmai for a year back in 1988 before moving up to Bangkok lots has changed there too...

Re: Is Living Here Difficult for You?
Those who know me also are aware that I am..at present back at work in the UK.
While I'm doing my annual stint of work I stay in a nice Yorkshire village with 3 pubs serving 'well kept' ales.
All 3 pubs serve food, I'm 5 miles from town with it's stores etc, no traffic snarl-ups, no rush-hours to contend with..fuel's gone down, so has beer prices here..supermarkets have had to shave prices..all-in-all, apart from the cold, murky weather oop north..
..good old Blighty is not-so-bad nowadays..way more pleasant in the summertime than snarled-up Hua Hin.

This is the way
Re: Is Living Here Difficult for You?
I was back in a Nottinghamshire village for last weekend and I enjoyed it. It's not really changed much since I was a kid there in the sixties and seventies. In some ways it's improved, you don't seem to get the mindless vandalism that used to go on and now there are many more park areas and hanging baskets that wouldn't have survived twenty years ago.dtaai-maai wrote:^^Sounds to me like an extremely small part of good old Blighty is not so bad nowadays...!

Re: Is Living Here Difficult for You?
I imagine living anywhere would be difficult for me at my income, age, and health issues, but the climate here doesn't help.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
