I refuse to buy,the older lady that was mentioned with the crook foot arrived to the bar i was in last night,doing her usual shoving these non fragrant roses into my face,i asked her how was her nice big house she did not answer,but i did notice once the heavens opened up last night....they were all stuck in some bar i guess,oh well so was i...lol

I'm sure most tourists are aware of the circumstances in which they are getting "cynically exploited" but just take a more care free (rightly or wrongly) attitude when on holiday.

^^ I doubt it. How are they to suspect exploitation until they see where they go after selling?

It was previously inferred that it was the tourists that are getting exploited, not the sellers (although I'm sure most would agree that they indeed are)

As long as there are people willing to buy from the kids - there will be kids on the street at 1am to sell to them.

A few targeted arrests would be a good start to dissuading those using the kids and raising more awareness as to the problem.

Speaking as a retired bloke who was involved in prosecuting offenders in the UK, I would say that the only way to curb this practice is rigorous law enforcement by the local police. I await developments with interest...

A quick Mai Ow Krap works perfectly well. If you're not going to buy, they won't waste time with you.

That said, there's a little dude around Binta who I recognise. He sees me, knows I'm not going to buy, but he always has a smile on his face and does a little dance. He usually carries two roses, wilted.

I think it works well for him, because newly arrived tourists think he's cute and buy from him.

Of course the law is being broken. At the very least it breaches all the labour laws on child employment. At the worst, it borders on child exploitation, trafficking etc etc.

This has been clamped down and enforced on a number of occasions. The problem is that a deal is done with the police and everything is back to 'normal'. There's a rumour that the police are 'on the take'. Not sure where that came from !!!!!!!!!!!

They're still operating though, got pestered afew times while in bkk, at sukhumvit area.
