My news-gathering is currently limited to Google News (for the sheer variety of sources + you can choose your own preferences) and Bangkok Post online (for the latest corruption and u-turn stories).

I have recently dumped BBC News UK online after (IMHO) their biased/unbalanced reporting i.e. anti the yes vote in the Scottish referendum, anti UKIP before the General Election in May and currently anti Corbyn.

End of rant - but it felt good...!

Top news today - a cow run over by a mini-bus. Must have commanded at least 5 minutes.

That was closely followed by a young kiddie chasing a chicken almost being run over.

Mrs BB loves it. Absolutely mind numbing.

Australian SBS is finally running a daily Thai news segment produced by Thai PBS. Sadly its more like Facebook than a news program. The GF uses Thai language Facebook for news and 'opinions'. I try to update her on world events but I might as well give her the EPL results for what she cares. The Food Network is her idea of current affairs. This lack of knowledge seems to stem from scant international geography and history taught at Thai schools. (Thailand is a flat earth country with a few mountains).

I would think there is no international history, geography or political sciences taught at Thai schools. All that matters is Thailand

Based on...?

Take a group of your average Thai 17-yr-olds and pit them against a similar group of British or American students, and I don't think there would be a huge difference. That's not a compliment to the Thai education system, just a reflection on the level of education in the US and UK. (Political sciences? Are you having a laugh? And how many western students could point to Thailand on a map?)

If you're talking 'average' then the British and American students will of course be far superior to the Thai students in History and Geography (Science and Math is a different matter). That surely goes without saying. As far as 'political science' goes...
And how many western students could point to Thailand on a map
I think you have either been out of England too long or are too used to ass-kissing the Thai citizen. We're still talking about the 'average' student, right? Most western kids in secondary (average kids... that bit in-between Einstein and europtimiste) will be able to place Thailand on a map.

I think you have lost touch with English Education DM. Though in places it has gone to shit, the majority of places are still far better than your average school here. When I say 'average' I mean those schools that parents are paying 20-30,000 a year to go to (Salesian is a good example).

I asked a group of (wealthy and well educated)15-16 year old kids this morning about 9/11. They'd never heard of it before. It had never been brought up in conversation, the news or other sources.

If it's outside of Thailand, the Thai people couldn't care less.

My Son attends an international school in BKK and has nightly homework. My wife (Thai) is more than happy to help him with most of his homework but struggles with English grammar and history. However as I travel frequently she often has no choice but to pitch in and do what she can.

My son's history homework has been a revelation to my wife; she has really become interested in learning simple world history that she previously had no clue about. She has actually been fascinated by some subjects and does Internet research in the day, only to question me in the evenings.

English grammar still remains a mystery to her (and me :D )

My other half with a degree in accounting and a masters degree in management had no idea who Winston Churchill was. When on the way back from somewhere to where I lived in West Berks, I said I wanted to stop to see Churchill's grave at Bladen, she thought I was talking about the dog linked to the insurance companies ads of the same name and was wondering why I wanted to stop. That is a true story.

While I agree that the Thai have very limited knowledge about European or American history, I wonder how many westerners (born after early 50's) know for example who Tojo was. On the other hand, I don't think the Thais know it either. Just wondering.

^ Many have probably heard his name but perhaps not known who he was. He's often mentioned in the news when the venom and bluster periodically starts concerning the Yasukuni Shrine. Pete

Never mind international news. How many thais have any idea about Thailand's actions during WW2 or what ASEAN is all about.

Equally its only through the WW2 bomb founded in Bangkok and then unfortunately exploded as reclaimed scrap that I learned of repeated American air raids on Chao Phraya rail bridges.

History has to be relevent for the audience to want to know more. News is similar
