These trivial things do have a profound effect on my life, much less so with the BIG things.
So, does anyone have a number for a good painter, please?
Thank you for the attention, but there's no telephone numbers on that thread and I haven't received any as PM either, so I am still looking.

Didn't take long for this thread to go off-topic.
This is kind of exactly what I am talking about here in this thread, People can just stay in their little gated communities(farang homeland simulators), villages, moo baans, small towns etc. and be completely insulated from Thailands problems and not have to deal with them. I really find that extremely extremely weird and disturbing as an American.

Just like when having a drink with a mate, your in detailed discussion about world affairs, ISIL, maybe even the Outlook for Thailand, a lovely lady walks past now your talking about sex and porn. Now what was the topic again?

What's wrong with insulating oneself from the problems one can not influence in any way?
I, for one, shall not worry about tectonic plates shifting willy-nilly hither and tither, about the cyclic system of ice-ages, about who's going to be the next president of the USA. I really find it extremely, extremely relaxing not to worry about things I can not influence, perhaps because I am not an American.
Now for something really BIG: Still no number of a good painter. I find this is extremely weird.

Just curious, How did you come up with the Username StevePIraq?
Not sure what the outlook is for Thailand as I'm finding it very difficult to get a good read on the whole set up here. Granted we've only lived here for a year and don't really understand the language, but I do try to keep up with the local news and events when I can. Not sure if it is all just lost in translation but I tend to get the impression that no one really knows what's going on here, nor does any one really care. It may just be the laid back attitude of the Thais or their thinking that they are far superior (and smarter) than every one else, that they don't have to explain things to foreigners.
Hell I'm very laid back, tolerant and respectful of the local's beliefs and culture, but man it can be so frustrating here at times where you just shake your head in disbelief with what you see and hear. Just simple things like getting harassed at a recent Police checkpoint (where I am fully compliant and legal) and politely asking a Police Officer why he ignored the bike in front of me with 2x locals and no helmets, where he responded "no money". I can live with that, but it just pisses me off and will do nothing for their reputation as a tourist destination. Only a minor thing I know, but the rot starts low and works its way up the food chain.
I really like Thailand and have met plenty of very nice and friendly locals who I am happy to call friends. But I do worry about the country and the path it is taking. I get the impression that they may be left behind, with other countries in the region going ahead of them in various industries and stability etc. Not sure what the answer is as they may just plod along as usual, but it is probably a good thing that they have some stability in a much revered royal family. We are actually heading to Vietnam to check it out as we've heard good things from friends there. Whether the grass is greener, only time will tell. Return to Thailand in the future? Maybe...cheers.
I think that your feeling of not quite understanding what is going on and what are the forces, or lack of forces, that affect life here is very general among ex-pats. I think we would like to hear of your impressions of VN>
The reason that there isn't any meaningful discussion of the Thai political situation on here anymore is because the Junta has made it impossible to post anything connected to the most important issues and events relevant to the future of the country.

The individual Thai don't like tourists, hence the individual find your argument nill and void
Yes, I did (thanks for the tip), and like a true gentleman he has responded. One of the BIG things in my life is getting sorted out.

Just where I was when I joined the forum.

^^ as an individual you probably couldn't influence much in your home country. Yes, you had the right to vote in local or national elections but really; what could you influence that was of consequence?
I knew, 15 years ago, when I first came to Thailand that I was going to lose any influence in the political scene.
I chose to live here initially because work brought me here, I will stay in retirement because on balance I'm less restricted here, the nanny state does not exist and other than the simple visa and visa extension process the red tape is minimal if you have a Thai partner that knows the ropes.
Be careful of changes that you wish for, your wishes may come true with all of difficulties that follow.
