Plans afoot to curb plastic bag waste

"The government, private sector and NGOs are discussing plans to levy a charge on the use of plastic carrier bags because of concerns about their negative environmental impact.

Research by the National Institute of Development Administration (Nida) showed that around 50% of Thais surveyed were willing to pay a fee for using plastic bags in department and convenience stores.

In their survey of 2,000 people nationwide, 88% of people said they were aware that plastic consumption affects global warming and 78% backed a complete ban on plastic bags."...............

It always amazez me where they dig up statistics.

The research also showed that Thais aged between 15-65 years old who comprise around 47 million people of the total population use approximately three plastic bags a week.

3 bags a week, I guess they only surveyed people living in the bush.

People, both Thais and Farangs, manage to shop at Makro with no trouble. That being the case, banning them completely shouldn't be a problem as people would adjust.

California has started charging for them to strongly encourage people to bring their own. It was a bit of a hassle after being away for so long to remember them, finally stuck a bunch of our bags in the car trunk. Still had to go back to the car to get them on occasion, but had no problems

3 plastic bags per week? Closer to 3 per hour.

The plastic shopping bags are a problem, no doubt. But an even bigger problem is all the other items that get stuffed into a plastic bag, or wrapped up in the crap. My biggest gripe is the overuse of shrink wrap. It is wrapped around just about everything edible! And then there is the ready to eat and drink containers! Making consumers pay for shopping bags is not going to stop any of the other uses of plastic containers.

Quite the opposite I'd imagine. They'll think they've bought the right to dump it anywhere.
