Is it true that expats can't have true Thai friends

Post by sidthesloth »

To me, Thai guys just don't seem sincerely friendly. I'd love to make a good friend who'd pop round etc and share with me without having some ulterior motive.

Do any of you expats here feel like you have a true Thai friend (especially with someone the same gender)?

when I was working i had a few Thai male friends, but they were "work friends' perhaps a drink after work a few times a year and when on trips. on the other hand when it was obvious that my time with the company was coming to an end, they all deserted me.

The simple answer seems to be it is not possible. I posted a similar question about a year ago. The responses were thoughtful, most had not even considered the guestion before but no one had a friend in the pop round for beer way.

I don't have that kind of friendship with Thais or Farangs in Thailand either.
I'll be honest, Life here in Thailand is extremely boring and very lonely almost all of the time. Thailand is not the great happy place that you see portrayed in the Tourist brochures.

Of course you can. I only knew 3 people when I moved to HH full time. A couple of mates from the UK and one Thai guy. Gradually I was introduced to some decent people both Thai and western and was invited to join a bike club where I met more people with common interests and formed friendships over time. Was going to join the pool league as well but could not commit due to work.

I think it is, if you're a tourist and only coming over for two weeks at a time. You have a totally different level of expectation and don't need to go through any of the hoops that residents do, from bureaucracy to daily shopping.

It use to be....but in the last 15 years Thailand and Thais have changed dramatically.

Sometimes now I wonder where all that mai-bpen-rai went.
