Having said that, I can't figure out why an Aussie would want an expensive cutlery set.
Hmm, I gave up using my hands and a pointy stick after I came back from a contract in Sud Efrica.
Actually, I have just spent around 150k Baht putting a new kitchen in my daughters Condo, and a full set was intended as a gift for her!

I wouldn't get involved but I'd feel uneasy if I saw somebody acting the way you described. (I'd feel even more awkward seeing the others sticking their noses in) - if that's really all they had left, what exactly did you expect them to do about it?
