moater wrote: Wed Dec 13, 2017 4:23 pm In Thailand you become a tax-resident when you stay 180 days in a calendar year, regardless of your visa. Yes, tourists too.
Obviously this isn't being enforced or effectively practiced, but it is the law.
I think that you will find that the law basically states: "income derived in Thailand".
Income sourced in Thailand is taxed whether you're a tax-resident or non-resident. Tax-residents are also taxed on income sourced outside of Thailand, if they bring it into Thailand within 1 year of it being sourced.

Here's a quick general quote from rd.go.th:

"Taxpayers are classified into “resident” and “non-resident”. “Resident” means any person residing in Thailand for a period or periods aggregating more than 180 days in any tax (calendar) year. A resident of Thailand is liable to pay tax on income from sources in Thailand as well as on the portion of income from foreign sources that is brought into Thailand. A non-resident is, however, subject to tax only on income from sources in Thailand."

We are getting off topic, so I just wanted to make a contribution ;)

For me, the biggest benefit to being an expat in Thailand is to enjoy the sun, the beach, the amazing street food and everything this country has to offer while all my friends in Europe are having a bad time because of the terrible cold snap... ahah

Even if I could make in Europe twice the money I'm making here, I swear I prefer to stay here enjoying life to the fullest.

That's all folks, hope you enjoyed my contribution lol

Looks like you're fairly new to all this. Enjoy your holiday, but don't wait too long to go back to Europe.
Unless you're on an expat company package (and from the sound of the above post you're not) there is not a lot that can be achieved in Thailand for someone as young as you. Yes, I am reading a lot between the lines.

I think the government website is the best place to start, certainly for the basics such as who has to pay tax, what income is taxable, the rates, deductions, allowances etc.

The English version is on:

Taxes are easy. WHO expert ... ???? Not sure what that means.

Taxes
VAT ..... on everything, almost, and 7 %. Possibly going to 10 % in the future. A sales tax, and usually, usually included in total price stated.

Excise tax, collected with big purchases, again, included with final price. Vehicle for instance, maybe 20+ % of the total cost or more. Something you won't really see, as stated, in the final price already.

Income tax....Google for that, and explains as a sliding rate. Retired, so can't relate. Low income, -0- to not much, and sliding % upward as income increases.

RE Taxes......this is the big one, and why Thailand is so appealing to me, a Yank. Virtually, nonexistent, for your basic housing, wife owning. A beer (1) at the bar can be more expensive than the yearly RE Tax. In the USA, last RE Tax bill was $4000 USD, yearly, for just one house, and in a crap school district, which a good portion was the 'school tax'. That was over 20 years ago, so the new 'socialist USA', guessing that's a lot more now.

RE Taxes and healthcare cost, or lack of, make Thailand very affordable. Don't really notice any other cost benefits from living here.

Unless seasoned traveller, for inexpensive beach holiday, or being sex tourist / sexpat. Anything 'western' sold here is usually more expensive, and a crappy version, from a Yank point of view.

Mr. bitter and twisted....

Where did you see in his post what job and remuneration he has? Yes you read a lot that isn't there, for sure.

Let him have his fun, and don't give advice when it wasn't asked for! A lot of youngsters spend time hopping between jobs in the Far East. I'm sure he knows he can flit to HK, Sing, even China if he wants, and maybe earn (yes and spend!) a lot more than in Thailand.

Why the sweet f**k go back to rotten Europe where the weather is shite, everyone scowls and you pay 20 Euro's for a pizza delivery :D

Dear sir, those who know me don't find me like that.. Perhaps you are reading a fair amount into it as well?
404cameljockey wrote: Wed Feb 28, 2018 3:13 pm Where did you see in his post what job and remuneration he has? Yes you read a lot that isn't there, for sure.
His own comments in the post above my reply.

He's welcome to have his fun. My comment was made based on my own observations and experiences with other people who've been there, done that. Spend too much time away and you lose opportunity to progress in your own country. And the comment was made to him..

Europe is still considered 'first world' with a lot of opportunities for it's citizens that many other countries are lacking. As for pizzas and the cost thereof in a first world country, the cost of living is also a reflection of the standard of living.
