I think that as long as your application is accompanied with a work permit and tax forms etc, you can renew it in Thailand. There are mods here who have wps, so I'll leave that side of it to them.
If you havn't got a wp, then I'm sure you'll be asked what you're doing with that type of visa as it's only designed for you to work here. If you got the original from a consulate in the UK - some are very "user friendly" - and you're not working, then I'm afraid that I don't see much chance of it being renewed in Thailand, or any other neighbouring country. Immigration have clamped down on all types of Non Imm visas unless you demonstrate grounds for getting one- ie, working for the B, or married to a Thai for the O, or meet the financial and age regulations for retirement.
Without more detailed info, it's difficult to give advice. Going back to the UK and reapplying for it from Hull etc might be your only option.
Let us know if you need more advice.

The non-immigrant "B" visa extends to persons with assets but who do not work in the Kingdom and are not age limited. The retirement visa is not to be confused with the non-immigrant B visa. Retirement visas are age limited, and require minimum (Thai) bank balances and income.
