Thai Baht vs. USD Dropping Like a Rock

Post by JamesWest »

34.85 right now.

"Technically, USD/THB has comfortably broken the 34.0 resistance and the level to watch out for is 34.56-61.
A move beyond that will open doors to 36.40, the 2009 high, whose breach could take the baht toward an 8-year low."

from one week ago. we have already past the 34.56-61 levels:

What to Do? A couple of years ago we were looking at TH for retirement. The AUS$ has dropped from just over 30Baht to 25.6. Was in Bali a couple of weeks ago and exchange was !0,000 Rph and spending power hadn't changed much from 3 years ago. Love Asia, but where to go in retirement, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia?

Wherever you go you have to factor in (worst case) currency fluctuations and inflation.

^^Yes.
I can't get too excited about the current rise in the value of the pound and the Euro against the baht. Maybe I've become a glass half empty bloke when it comes to these things, but I can't help thinking this will be a one-week wonder. Hope I'm wrong.
This is the way

I have learned over the many years of the business paying in foreign currencies and since my retirement here 7 years ago that you can't guess what the rate will be tomorrow. I am just taking what I can now and smiling. Nice to be able to pad my bank balance with my monthly remittance from the U.S. now. Who knows what tomorrow will bring.

I seem to recall in late 1997 or early 1998, the pound was worth 90 baht. I remember wondering if it would go to 100 ! I also recall getting 15 percent interest in the banks.

In 1998 the baht reached an all time high against the dollar of 55.50 baht. I had a friend who was making time payments on a loan for a building plot of beach front land that he had bought a few months earlier at 25 baht to the dollar. He paid off the loan and saved about $50,000 in the cost of the land just because of the rapid change in exchange rate. He moved there and built his bungalow on it in 2000 with the money he saved and has been living happily on the beach for over 15 years.

Our first visit here was Christmas 1997. Bought a few Baht in UK at 70 but whilst we were here it reached 96 and still seemed to be going up when we went home early in the new year. As tourists it seemed difficult to spend money! A bit different these days.

First time it has gone that way in quite a while. Last year it was 32.1 US$, now 35.1. We are coming over in November as well as others we know. So do you transfer $ now or bring cash with you? Inquiring minds want to know.
