UK Passport requirements

Our 11 year old grandson has a Thai mother and a British father who are now no longer together. We would like to investigate the possibility of getting him a British passport our sons name is on the Thai birth certificate. All involved grandparents our son and Thai mother are all on good terms with each other any help, advice in the process for this would be appreciated.
