Maximum ATM withdrawal and lowest fee

Post by Ralfredo » Thu Jan 26, 2017 5:01 pm

Hi all!

What are the maximum amount you can withdraw with a single withdrawal nowadays? I have a Swedish credit card if that matters. Do different ATM have different limits?

What are the fees? There used to be a feeless ATM on the third floor in Market Village. Are there any ATM with lower or no fee these days?

If I remember correctly (not very likely) maximum amount used to be 20 000 THB and the fee 180 THB. I want to withdraw as much as possible (within reason) with one single (low) fee so if there is a difference between "god" and "bad" ATMs, I really like a recommendation of a few "god" ones.

My experience is they all charge 200 bt fee now. I suggest you consider taking your card to the counter inside the bank, process the withdrawal with the teller, instead of the machine outside. I'm positive you can withdraw much more each time working with the person at the counter than you can at the machine outside. Not sure about the fees for an inside withdrawal.

I used to use the foreign desk at Bangkok Bank on Petchkasem. There was no limit to how much you could take - "as much as you've got in your UK account" - and there was no fee.
This was 4-5 years ago though.

I've always understood the maximum withdrawal is set by your own bank. That's certainly proved correct with a couple of UK banks. The limit of course will be in, for example, GBP so you would need to take account of the conversion. With Thai banks, the limit is usually 20,000 but can be drawn in multiples. A word with the bank can get this increased. My single withdrawal limit with Bangkok Bank is 50,000 but even then I can draw multiple amounts.
The ATM charge is 200 baht which you can't avoid, but some offer a choice of exchanging it to your local currency. Never take this option as the rate is poor.

So what Banks don't charge now if i open a Thai bank account and use their ATM. Two hundred baht per withdraw that would soon mount up for me.

If you have a Thai bank account and withdraw from the same bank in the same province there is no fee, I think if you withdraw elsewhere e.g. Bank in Hua Hin and withdraw in Cha Am, they charge 30 baht.

Yeh, the 200 baht is only for withdrawals from foreign banks.

Yes that's one limit. In my case the limit is on how much I can withdraw in total over a seven day period. For me the limit is around 55 000 THB on the card I usually use. I also have other cards and I guess there's some kind of limit there to but I don't know the details.

I guess I just try to withdraw 30 000 THB and if that not work, I go with my usual amount of 20 000 THB. Partly because of the ATM fee i prefer rather large withdraws done seldom. Another reason is that every time I insert my card I'm a little afraid that the machine will swallow the card and newer return it. I also think that fewer withdraws reduces the risk of skimming.

And no, I don't walk around the Bintabaht area at night with 30 000 THB in cash...

Thanks everyone that have commented so far!

I think Kasikorn allow 4 'out of area' withdrawals each month without any charge. I've never done more than 4 to test it.

I get charged 10 THB by Kasikorn every time I use another bank's ATM.
Hold on, maybe the first 4 other bank transactions are free? I've never checked but will do.
But back to the OP. As said, I was using a UK debit card years ago and could have withdrawn any amount from BKK Bank's Foreign Desk (as long as I had the money in the UK) for no fee.
But then, my bank in the UK used to crucify me with charges.

Yep, charges whatever you do... :( I once compared different methods and worst by far was buying Thai currency in Sweden. Best was bringing Swedish cash to Thailand and buying Baht there, using a Swedish card in ATM was somewhere in between.

Nowadays I always pay with credit card at for example Tesco but somehow I don't think my card would be of much use at the local market...

As I don't feel comfortable with bringing to much cash from Sweden I usually use all methods. Bring a little cash in Baht, a little in Swedish krona, use the ATM a few times and pay "big" bills with credit card if possible.

Personally I transfer relatively large amounts on a foreign transfer. I transfer in GBP (which gives you a better rate when it arrives here) and my bank charges me 9 pounds 50 to transfer 2,000 pounds. I know there are other banks that are cheaper but either way it's a damn sight cheaper than drawing via an ATM. Family members that come to visit/holiday transfer into my bank. If you haven't a Thai bank, maybe you have trusted friends here that will help.

Don't you just love to hear the sound of the money being counted at the ATM, you then know that your cash is good to go. :)

I bring a certain amount of cash with me nowadays,:) when I first started coming to Thailand, the Thai bank ATMs were no charge, as was my Nationwide Flex account, how times change.
Now it is 200thb (£5) for the Thai bank and somewhere around 3% UK bank per transaction, no longer cheap but it is personally not worth me opening a Thai Bank account.
