Musicans BAR

Post by ollie-gwm-london »

hows about a group of us musicians forming a legal company and taking over a bar in hua hin...would be fantastic to have a jazz/rock/classical/newage/thaipop/fusion bar with 24/7 live music...I am semi serious about this ....Hua hin has a jazz festival each year so that sort of music is obviously popular...It would be also good for local talent nights hopefully getting the thai people involved (I hate ex pat segregation!)
What do you reckon guys+girls... to do it legally too !! maybe set up a little recording set up for wannabe stars upstairs too...
sure it would be popular... nice chilled out music in the day.. more poppy stuff at night ...but a good piano in from bkk there is also a yamaha music school in hua hin (i practised there)! get the students involved...
let me know your thoughts
interested to talk to ex pats or long stay guys (i'm 31 and thinking of semi living in thailand)

Sounds like a good idea, I play acoustic guitar badly so could join. The legal thing maybe a problem, not sure how you get a work permit for being a farang musician !?

I know the Thai music places are popular with Thais, not quite sure how a farang one would go down though, Hua Hin is very seasonal and suffers in the low months.

If you are looking at this as money making proposition I beleive you are barking up the wrong tree IMVHO.

I used to run two jam nights a week in my bar in BKK, problem was musso's seemed to be the tightest customers I had seeing them spending little in the bar as their interest was playing or waiting to play rather than eating or drinking.

The Thai intergration idea is good in principle, however problems include communication, different music interests other than 'hotel California' :guns: and their drinking habits in these environments vis a vis them wanting to bring their own!

Bottom line I tried it twice (for a few months each time). The musso's spent little and drove profitable custom away.

NB I play guitar (very badly) and loved the evenings myself; my bottom line hated them!

On the other hand there other jam nights in BKK that are 'blues' specific that seem to work ...however these are backed up with house bands.

If you insist on doing the project legally your 'regular' farang performers will need work permits which is nigh on impossible to get unless you are a resident in a big hotel or alike. If you don't get the work permits you can't have 'regular' falang musicians legally. To get 1 work permit requires 4 Thais to be employed at the venue and 2 million baht capital investment in the bank... non starter legally IMVHO. Most places just wing it but you do run the risk of 'the boys in brown' looking for a donation to their temple as a minimum or closure of your bar at worst. I used to make the tamboon on a monthly basis FYI!
