Venice comes to Hua Hin
Re: Venice comes to Hua Hin
Drove past yesterday and there are all sorts of banners claiming "Now Open". Seemed to be a lot of cars parked there at the front of it.
May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil know`s you`re dead!

Yes I saw the same although it definitely didn't look as though that many shops were open just yet.Nereus wrote:Drove past yesterday and there are all sorts of banners claiming "Now Open". Seemed to be a lot of cars parked there at the front of it.

Is the use of 'crocks' to provide employment to residents of hua hin ?tuktukmike wrote: As for kids amusement I am sure they will have something planned, miniture railway/mini zoo/kids playground with a few crocks maybe.

Well the place certainly looks impressive from 1st glance off the road, but will it be like the Colonade Mall next to HH shopping Mall?...that opened and for months after anyone who went inside were subjected to open ceilings, dangling wires & exposed utilities, plus workmen on step-ladders to contend with...must be the Thai way..yes we're open, but no, we're not finished. Let's give it time, a bit of patience just may see a rather pleasant place to browse & shop in a coupla months from now..??
Re: Venice comes to Hua Hin
Who can say, let's hope they import some really good Italian chefs/restaurants to HH...
Re: Venice comes to Hua Hin
Amen to that. I live virtually opposite and it is open but DEFINITELY not finished.usual suspect wrote:Well the place certainly looks impressive from 1st glance off the road, but will it be like the Colonade Mall next to HH shopping Mall?...that opened and for months after anyone who went inside were subjected to open ceilings, dangling wires & exposed utilities, plus workmen on step-ladders to contend with...must be the Thai way..yes we're open, but no, we're not finished. In fact last week when I drove past I said to my friend give it 6 weeks and this should be open. In fact it opened in less than 6 days.

I cant get excited about this project. Will it add anything to the experience of living in HH. Another place, rather like the so called floating markets with many shops with the same things that you can buy from many other shops.

It's probably best to wait until the project is completed before praising or condemning the place. I have no idea what outlets will be there, although supposedly a Villa Market, which will be much more convenient for me living closer towards Cha Am. It's clearly going to be very commercialised so doubt it will be somewhere that many residents will want to use as their main shopping venue, but I'm reserving my verdict until after its finished and I've visited the place and see what they have to offer.
Re: Venice comes to Hua Hin
It looks like it is an 'outdoor' mall from the pictures and when I passed by so I wonder if it will have any impact on MV as it seems to me the attraction of MV is that the average Thai can keep inside the aircon, dry and avoid exposing their skin to sunlight (dread the thought of looking like they work outside). Perhaps it will attract people after dark and a certain amount who want to avoid the traffic outside MV but I cannot see my tribe wanting to expose themselves to sunshine and heat when they can do MV, go to the movies, eat cheaply at Tesco and get the shopping fix. It would really have to offer something to attract them.

Re: Venice comes to Hua Hin
We popped in on our way back from HH this morning. The only things we could see open were one t-shirt shop and a couple of ice cream/popcorn stalls. I asked Mrs D-M why they bothered opening it, and she said (predictably) "so that Thai people can take photos". Silly question in the first place.
It is extremely exposed to the elements and the sun reflecting off the concrete makes it very hot.
There is a sort of train affair that will give your kids a tour of the place and some rather sweet pony & traps that will definitely appeal to many. No ideas of prices.
There will definitely be a Market Village there at some point, but I don't know what size - round the back somewhere.
If you're heading that way and have a curious family with nothing better to do, you might as well stop by for 15 minutes and have a look round. Otherwise, I definitely wouldn't bother.

Re: Venice comes to Hua Hin
We were going to Cha-Am today, so thought that we'd pop in to give the place the once over. I was armed with my mobile, so thought I'd take a couple of snaps.
First thing we noticed as we arrived was that the flags saying they were open had gone. We parked up, and found all of the flags layed down - had they been flown too soon?:
We then walked onto the building site they call Venezia. It was easy to see what it would look like when it's finished, but this project is still many weeks from the finished product. I took a couple of panoramic photos. You should be able to pick out that most shops were shells, and many of them still had major work to be carried out:
The canals were not even filled:
The few shops that were open were very expensive, ranging from a single wooden coat stand at 100,000 Baht (yes that was the price). Actually, I think it was meant to be a sculpture, but did look like a coat stand for a single coat. Through to a bottle of chilled water, that would cost 7 Baht in a 7-11 at 20 Baht - Mrs BB was very put out, and inpolitely told them what they could do with it.
My thoughts: It will be a pleasant, but plastic place to take visitors on a rainy day. It will not be a place for every day shopping.

I wouldn't under-estimate the power of the photo-op. Plearn Wan, the retro building up past the King's Palace isn't that impressive yet is a major attraction for Thais.
Re: Venice comes to Hua Hin
I agree, it will look very nice (Disneyland style), and will attract a lot of weekend Bangkok traffic. There will be photo opportunities a plenty. The playground for kids looked quite substantial, but was still behind hoardings so can't say for definite.
