Halloween in Hua Hin
Re: Halloween in Hua Hin
Strange......over this side it's a huge event at school and in the neighborhoods. Kids in costume everywhere, and more are EU and Thai than American. Pete

This is the way
Re: Halloween in Hua Hin
Been here 9 Halloweens and no kids ever rang my doorbell on any of them. Could be my large dog inside the gate that raises heck with anyone walking by on foot though.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Maybe it varies from place to place, but I grew up in Cornwall (UK), and i can remember, some (nearly) 40 years ago, dressing up and going door to door. Treats were rare, but we tried to scare those we visited. WE did this almost every year in my childhood, together will neighbourhood kids. Actually we were often called more than just Scallywags. I'm sure it was US inspired, but seemed quite well established by the time I joined in.dtaai-maai wrote:Pete, kids going door to door is very much a US phenomenon. I've never experienced it in Europe except for a few scallywags jumping on the TV-inspired bandwagon and certainly not here, and frankly, I suspect most parents would be horrified at the thought these days - sadly.
I remember 'penny for the guy' when I was kid, but I suppose that's a thing of the past now too. <sigh>
Now my own kids dress up here in Bangkok and also go door-to-door, but you need to know the right (Farang-populated areas to visit). Treats much more common here, and seems very international now.

I remember back when I was a kid in the early 70's in Norway, there was a rural tradition that kids (and often adults too), usually in the week between Christmas and New Years Eve dressed up in old clothes or old sacks and go around to the different farms in the area scaring people and demanding candies and drinks. This was a very old tradition in Norway that dates back to probably the Viking age. It was called "å gå julebukk" or "to go Christmas goat".
But still back then in the 70's it was a dying tradition, and you very seldom here about it anymore.

I used to hate Halloween, then I figured - If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Every year get's bigger and better. Just had a 5am wedding!

Tesco might have some delivered soon because, due to 'twitter outrage', they have withdrawn these from sale in the UK. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24278768.
I don't think Amazon have a Thai outlet or you could probably have got one of these http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24611408 which, in a strange way, looks less nasty than the real thing.
It won't be long until Halloween is banned in the UK for offending at least one twitter user.

How did it go over there last night? We were swamped on my Rayong side until about 2000-2030. Most definitely the majority were Thai kids.
I assume at minimum your Binta girls were in costume. Pete

I left Mrs BB alone with her broomstick last night, while I went out to the quiz. My perch at Johnny's 56 was perfect for people watching. All that I saw was one lady selling something wearing flashing red horns, one man with either a badly bruised face or wearing a lot of make-up (not katoey style) and a young girl wearing a mask.

A damp squid I thought that said. ....maybe applicable as well. Doesn't Pharvey have experience with non-damp squibs?
