Myanmar's marine Eden braces for tourism
MERGUI ARCHIPELAGO, Myanmar (AP) — Where the Indian Ocean rolls toward Myanmar's southwestern coast, a lacework of 800 islands rises, fringed with shimmering beaches of no footprints.
Here hornbills break a primeval silence as they flutter through soaring jungle canopy. Pythons slumber on the gnarled roots of eerie mangrove forests. Only rarely will you spot the people who live here: the Moken, shy, peaceful nomads of the sea.
The Mergui archipelago has been called the "Lost World," but outsiders have found it — first fishermen, poachers and loggers, and now developers and high-end tourists. The people losing this world are the Moken, who have lived off the land and the sea for centuries..........

This could be interesting if these will become available for public.

There must be plenty of things about Thailand (Siam, Ayutthaya) as well. Maybe these could shed light to periods of which there are very little written information left in Thai language.

A more probing question is if that type of E-library is available at universities in Thailand, or do they retain their traditional approach? Of course, anything is available through student initiative, but do the universities assist and support outside resources like Burma appears to have embraced. Pete

In the last two years I've spend quite a bit of time in Myanmar, dealing with the bureaucrats and I just don't get the sense that the military are to keen to let go.

Burma to launch online visa system for tourists
Burma plans to launch an online application system for tourist visas later this year, according to the Ministry of Immigration and Population, which announced on Friday that it was opening a tender for the project.
As tourist arrivals in Burma continue to grow, the ministry has received complaints about the difficulties and delays in applying for visas at embassies, according to Maung Maung Than, director-general of the Department of Immigration and National Registration.
“We’re considering the process of online visa applications, and we’re confident we can get it operating by September,” Maung Maung Than told The Irrawaddy, adding that non-tourist visas would not be available through the new system.
Visa fees will be paid online, he said, adding that the fees would be determined later by the operating company and the government.

We have brought several young Myanmar engineers to Bangkok to gain experience in a engineering office and all have done really well. I had no doubt, but several of my Thai colleagues were skeptical.

Myanmar tourism surges in 2014
Tourist arrivals to Myanmar in first half of 2014 increased more than 40% compared with the same period last year, officials said Thursday.
Some 1,604,746 tourists entered the country from January to July, a 43% increase over the 1,121,795 visitors in the same period last year, data from the Hotel and Tourism Ministry showed.
Most visitors were from Asia, especially from Thailand, Japan and China, which have made up 71% of tourist arrivals in 2014, it said.
Tourism numbers have been on the rise since the country began to open up following the 2010 election that ended military rule. The tourism industry saw record-breaking arrivals of 2 million people last year.
Myanmar authorities have predicted 3 million arrivals in 2014 and 5 million in 2015.

Re: The Burma/Myanmar Thread
You’ve been to the Golden Land: you got up at sunrise to photograph the first light of dawn on Shwedagon Pagoda; you coaxed an Inthwa boatman on Inle Lake into showing you how to paddle with your knee; you’ve flown over the ancient ruins of Bagan in a hot-air balloon.
But this time, you’d like to discover something a wee bit different, to get off the “been there, done that” beaten track of Rangoon-Mandalay-Bagan-Inle-Ngapali. It’s time to discover those precious historical sites and natural wonders that the tour groups don’t see – the places that are still unspoilt.
DVB brings you our Top 10 Tips for Visitors to Burma 2014. But plan to head there soon – we don’t expect all these wonders to be on the list by next year.

Let a million factories rise
Before Myanmar becomes like Thailand, it will have to become like Bangladesh.
PREPARATIONS for the first section of the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ) included clearing nearly 400 hectares of land and building roads to a nearby port. The industrial park is scheduled to open in the middle of next year and some of the 22 companies set to move in will begin building their factories by the end of the month. Yet the most immediate beneficiary will not be Myanmar’s economy. Takashi Yanai, head of the Burmese-Japanese joint venture developing Thilawa, jokes that the monastery sitting in a finger of forest jutting into the park has much to gain. “You cannot touch a monastery in this country,” says Mr Yanai. With every corporate groundbreaking will come a donation to the monks that may one day pay for a grand golden stupa.......

Well they're the people telling everybody, I always find in bizarre why people promote unspoilt places in this manner so they can be destroyed by tourists.....the places that are still unspoilt.
