I got back on the beach with the dogs tonight - first time since last week's rain. Wow, I wouldn't have believed the rain took 4' of sand from the end of Soi 75  .

Anyway :offtopic: there were more jellyfish about tonight, both washed up and in the water than I've seen for ages. The full spectrum of sizes and colours as well.

Be very careful if you swim in the sea at the moment please.

I was in HH last year at this time and there were LOTS of jellies. Is this typical? I'll be back in a month or so. Will they be gone?

There are always jellyfish, but sometimes more than others.

I think they usually follow the rain, so there is a high probability you'll see quite a few in October.

Too bad those jellyfish can`t be cooked up or anything, I wonder if they would make good fertilizer
for the garden. Cold Mike, I guess you will have to get a new fantasy. I certainly do not want to get any jellyfish
bites near my head, as I would have to use vinegar for sure. Ha ha,

Box jellyfish?

Post by Juice81 »

We are coming to Khao Takiab with two small children in february thru march and I'm a bit worried about the jellyfish. I heard there have been sightings of box jellyfish in Hua Hin a few months ago?? Is this true? Should we be worried? I understand that there are more jellies in autumn than spring? Thanks!

If you are worried and concerned, make sure your children are wearing a lycra suit covering torso, arms and legs.

I don't recall any story or report indicating "box jellyfish" in the Hua Hin area? Samui yes, they've had trouble with them down there.

Gulf of Thailand around Samui/Koh Tao and Phang Nga are the worst affected areas, although here have been the odd cases around Koh Chang and Koh Mak.

Just remember white vinegar is the best thing to reduce the toxicity and stop the venom from spreading through the body.

Yes, it's a shame - all of the now defunct beach bars used to carry the vinegar and some green leaf remedy. They've helped other members of my family many times (the little beasties never got me).

Of course, they aren't there any more.

[Edit] Not seeing so many washed up on my nightly beach walks over the last few days, and those we are seeing are very small.

Aloe vera is also considered to be very helpful against jellyfish stings, as is lemon juice.

Okay, what do you mean defunct bars? Aren't there any bars on the beach anymore? We were in Khao Takiab couple of years ago and I thought the crappy little bars were the best thing on the beach! Now I'm really worried! Even more than about the jelly fish and my children...!
