IPod or similar

Post by PeteC »

I know nothing about these but like the idea of getting one for the beach, when walking etc.

Question, is the quality of the music downloaded affected by the quality of your internet connection? Or, does it have some kind of gizmo that overcomes that and gives you clear music? Thanks. Pete

Pete,

My son uses his about 12 hours every day, and has about 20Gb of music on it. He has only ever downloaded about 10 tracks in total. His preference is to get hold of the CD (very cheap in Thailand) and rip the music in to a MP3 or WMF file before uploading it.

His theory has always been that he has the source CD in the event of the computer crashing. Of course you also have the advantage of being able to use the CD on other media as well.

Hallo Pete

There are other players besides the overly pricesd IPOD such as from the company called Creative (which also produces high quality color graphic cards for your computer) has the Zen which comes out in may variations the latest I think is the Zen Movie which besides music lets you download Pictures and Vidoeclips from the the Internet and computer same thing you can do with the newest (5th)Generation of IPods which there allready is a term for for downloading videoclips from the Internet onto your IPod which is called "Podcasting'".
Now Microsoft had just released it's counterpart to the IPod which is called Zune it has the same ability as the IPod plus a bigger screen for your Pictures and Vidoe clips and one feature the latest IPod don't have.
You can swap songs from one zune to another Zune via WiFI but for a limited Time though.
It's going to be an uphill struggle for Micosoft Zune to break the dominance of Apple's IPod which has a 70%+ Marketshare in the Portable MP3 Harddisc market .

I hope I don't Overwhelm you with that much Info  !

I know that for the iPod at least, you can also hook the iPod up to your car stereo system - more or less unlimited music and no more cd's or changers in the boot!

Anyone know if the cheaper MP3/4 players can be fitted like this?

My son has a Philips GoGear 30Gb, and I know you can buy a car conversion kit very cheaply.

Quality depends on bit-rate of rip. If you download in partiel files and connect afterwards, you might experience "glitches" here and there.
I use small program to check finished file for that - PM my if you want copy.
Ripping from cd's don't give problems.

Jamie, a while back I bought a cheap car conversion kit. It was a tape cassette connected to a cable. It was crap and didn't work. How are ipod's hooked into the car stereo system?

Not sure if these are on sale here, but in Taiwan I bought a neat gadget that plugs into your car cigarette lighter. This has a USB port on it. Plug in any memory stick or MP3 player with a USB connection, tune your radio to any one of 10 optional frequencies FM & 10 AM and bingo - you get your music through your car radio.

No wires just a useful blocking of the fag lighter :thumb:
