Channel 8 on Monday issued an apology for errors in reporting of a popular video game, Grand Theft Auto (GTA), after a news anchor last week called on parents to burn the game because it would make their children aggressive and violent.

The digital TV station owned by RS Plc quickly came under heavy fire after footage of news anchor Wiyada Peerarattakun condemning the "negative influence" of this action-adventure video game during the News Talk programme spread through social media.

During the show, Ms Wiyada called on parents to burn the game if their children owned it. She said GTA was banned in the United States and the game had inspired young people to commit crimes.
Netizens, including gamers, criticised the news anchor for wrongly faulting GTA, saying the latest version of game was not banned in the US.

They said video games do not make people, particularly youths, violent, and that parenting, social environment and mental health contribute more to people's actions and behaviour.

One net user wrote: "I think Thai soap operas have more negative effects than video games. The themes of most Thai soaps are about women hitting other women over a rich man, and superstitious nonsense."

Videos ridiculing the news anchor were also posted.

In the apology, Channel 8 said Ms Wiyada was not careful when presenting the news story. Lessons had been learned and such a thing would not happen again, the statement said.
