It is very important to stay in hotels which provide hotel safes or deposit box. Nowadays, maximum hotel are having hotel safes. You can search online where you want to stay in which location and all

I always check that te box esare fixed down in some way. Some you could just lift and carry the whole thing out of the room.

^^^^ I agree, we've stayed in quite a few places where I've had to make them actually fix the safe down, otherwise as said, you could pick it up, put it under one arm and walk out with it.

The problem with these in-room "safes" is that they are not that good. Apart from the fact that most are fairly flimsy and could probably be opened with a small crow bar, the hotel has to have some way of opening them if mischievous guests leave it locked with nothing in it when they check out. Thus if you are staying in an establishment with some dodgy members of staff, it is possible they could help themselves to some or all of the contents of the safe without you even knowing it had been opened.

In fact I think there have been reports on this forum of this happening in HH, which I believe the hotel refused to take responsibility for.

But you don't need dodgy hotel staff, when gullible ones will do just as nicely!! Consider the case of the con man, whose exploits were the subject of a Discovery Channel programme, who on one occasion (at least) not only tricked the staff of a 5 star hotel in Dublin (if memory serves me correctly) into letting him into a room that wasn't his, but he then conned the security staff into believing that his kid, who was supposedly out at the time, had messed up the combination to the room safe. Accordingly they helpfully opened the safe for him and he helped himself to the contents (which included gold Rolex, several thousand dollars in cash, jewelry and passports). The unsuspecting victims suspected nothing until they tried to open the safe and couldn't, as the bar steward had obviously changed the combination when he relocked the safe, before making his getaway :cuss:

I always think it is much better to use a hotel safe deposit box, situated in a secure room under the total control of the hotel management, that way they have no recourse if anything goes awry.
