Re: New pedestrian overpass for Market Village
You should all realise that the footbridge already built at Bluport was specifically put there to allow the clientele from the Intercontinental Hotel to cross the road to the 'Bluport Wing' of said hotel - without having to get their shoes dirty..........
Re: New pedestrian overpass for Market Village
But that's the point, people are crossing the road, and none of the aids provided at great expense are being used. Going back to the OP, unless there's an escalator, or free som tam at the top, people won't use it. Using the traffic lights, would cause too much traffic disruption I assume - whatever, they constantly flash amber.Chazz14 wrote:Maybe there's no-one on the bridge or crossing the road because they're all driving cars and motorcycles!
In the video, there was only one person crossing the road, but on the outward journey (the one unsuitable for publication ), there were a lot of people crossing.

Not too long after the video, the traffic lights were switched on.Big Boy wrote:Well guys, I had a huge belly laugh today when I saw the Bluport Solution to crossing Petchkasem Road. My dashcam picked it up in both directions, but my laughter was so loud on my outbound journey (together with a few expletives) that it wasn't suitable for public viewing. However, I forced myself to be quiet on the homeward journey in the hope that it would happen again - of course it did. TIT and low tech works(ish).
They built a very pretty footbridge - not a soul on it. They installed pedestrian lights - they seem to permanently flash amber, not that people take notice of traffic lights,
So what is the solution? 2 security guards gingerly stepping in front of traffic trying to help people across the road. I stopped for them in both directions after checking there were no motorcycles about. As the security guard gingerly steps out, I could see the fear in his eyes, although I don't think the dashcam picks that out - look at his footsteps, they may tell you his state of mind.
As I approached the lights over the weekend, the Amber countdown started, so unlike many, I didn't take it as an instruction to accelerate, I slowed down and stopped. The guards are still there, and despite the red light, they guide the pedestrians across the road - well done guys.
You couldn't make the next bit up, and I'm sure it must be unique to Thailand. The pedestrians safely across, and the guards back to their kerbside posts, the lights still showing red, the guards start to wave traffic on, and basically threw their arms in the air when everybody waited for the green light.
I've got the video, but will keep it for my own amusement this time.

I noticed that the other day as well - and everyone also waited until the lights changed. Probably farangs in the front row!

Used the bridge tonight, crossing over to MV. Somebody goofed. On the eastern end stairs, every riser is the same height, except the last one. It's double the height of the others. People will fall...
Re: New pedestrian overpass for Market Village
That's a Thai trait. Many staircases have at least one of irregular height.

If you use the next bridge, the one by the entrance to the Catholic school, don't pay too much attention to the riser height of the steps as you'll then knock your head on a concrete beam!

At 5 foot 2 hitting my head is not something that ever happens to me, till I used the pedestrian overpass at Boonthavorn.
Re: New pedestrian overpass for Market Village
Tried the bridge today.
Good to see the risers are not too high - makes it easy to walk up. At the top, the bridge walkway is wide – pleasantly curved and easy to walk over.
I did see the increased riser height problem at ground level (east side) – attempted fix by adding a concrete ground slab, but there are increased riser heights (in about 3 other places) at the change of stair direction.
Sad that they stuff up the risers (two increased heights at about half way up, one increased height at top) as someone will fall or slip, possibly down to the next landing.
Now they need to fence the central carriageway.

There is a sign saying that the bridge is open temporarily until 16th (and still open on 17th bit TIT). Perhaps getting it open for Songkran was a rush job and they will close it again and get the job finished properly. But there again.......
Re: New pedestrian overpass for Market Village
Personally, I think all pedestrian crossing here should have a system installed where spikes pop up when the lights turn red, similar to the spike things which police sometimes use to end a police chase.
I'm sure Somchai won't be happy when he needs to replace all four tyres, but he will almost certainly learn a lesson the very first time it happens. Of course, the authorities could be a lot kinder than me, and even put up warning signs as well.
If they could spend a fortune on those silly lights in the road, surely they could some nice spikes.
Don't try to impress me with your manner of dress cos a monkey himself is a monkey no less - cold fact

Good idea, but it needs to be smart enough to allow emergency vehicles through.
Then there's the Bangkokian who stops immediately after the lights, just before he can. I've had that at a rail crossing. Traffic is moving steadily. Bangkokian gets across the crossing and sees chicken for sale on the other side. Bangkokian stops to get his fix of chicken, leaving Johnny Farang stranded on the crossing. Warning signal sounds, and barrier drops - fortunately it was only a half barrier, but the arse end of my car is still in the track of oncoming train. Thankfully, Bangkokian realises what a dick he's been (something to do with my horn sounding frantically) and moves forward.
