Look at it from the Junta's point of view-- A popular figure with voters, particularly in the North, a rallying point for the opposition has now left the country and can't come back. A wonderful outcome.

Re: Thaksin in Dubai. If Dubai plans to extradite him to Thailand he'll go live somewhere else. He's got other passports and seemingly unlimited amounts of money so it won't be a problem for him and little sis can just tag along as she has done all her life. They and Thailand are better off with the Shinawatras gone.

In Thai or out of Thai, they will always be a factor in the endless dance of the elephants that is Thai politics.

A lot depends on the detail of the agreement when finalised. It's highly unlikely that any government will extradite anyone for what is considered a politically motivated crime. Would depend how it's viewed in the country they're in.

I think both sides showed they care more about the Thai people, than their own agenda. Excellent.

I think both sides acted to save their faces and their asses. the little dictator lets her go and doesn't have to deal with her going to prison and the backlash that would cause. little orphan annie agrees, doesn't have to go through a trial, prison and the rioting of her supporters. out sight, eventually out of mind.
there's no altruism involved. everything political is political. you are correct it is excellent.

If she had gone to court and then prison (forgone conclusion), there would have been riots. Riots kill people, cause major injuries, and destroy property.

She knew and so does the Government.

And also, like her brother, she cannot return.

I saw her on Thai news this after noon, receiving gifts from her sycophantic followers. Not sure where she was. She kept smiling and waving, then, for an instant, the mask fell and her eyes turned into snakes and her mouth twisted into a leer. It was like quick take in a horror movie. Scary. Good riddance.

That would most likely have been from a few days ago in Thailand.

Surely in these days and with so many immigration procedures in every country Thailand could just ask the UAE if she entered Dubai or other airports in the UAE, the Thai authorities must have copies of her passport and ID number.

But then again she probably already has new nationality and passports. Money buys just about anything.

Thaksin, who lives in Dubai, had his passport revoked by a previous Thai government in 2009. He acquired nationality and passports from Montenegro and Nicaragua, enabling him to travel, and the previous government issued him new passports after they came to power in 2011.

Many countries do a passport sale/dual citizenship policy these days, think the UK one costs about a million pounds...rakes in loads of money for those countries that do it and the price is chunk-change for the political classes across the globe. She can flee to Europe easy as they will not send her back to a junta run country that is obviously carrying out a political witch hunt. Besides, London has played host to every kind of rich political despot for decades, nothing new there.

As for good riddance, well, many millions of locals here would disagree. Guess a fascist military junta aces it every time.

Yingluck has a lot of support in Thai. The northerners and northeasterners still like the family and many Thai women are proud of her as the first female PM.

Plus they also love her and her party for the huge bribes all the farmers got. The rice scheme was a total bribe to the population to entrench the party.
