Living in Phuket ?

Post by trevorcasto » Fri Mar 09, 2018 11:19 am

Hi all,

I’m starting a new thread, as I need some valuable testimonies from long-time expats as you guys ;).

I’ve been offered a position in Phuket, Thailand. I really love this country. It is so cheap, warm, culturally rich, and paradisiac that I have the feeling I cannot let this chance slip away…

What do you guys think about living in Phuket? Any expats there that can provide a valuable feedback?

I’ve already lived for a while in Bangkok, but this city is literally too much for me. I enjoyed it the time I stayed, but I guess a more “chilled out” place will be a better match for me. I’m looking for something less crazy, where I can enjoy a very good standard of living with my GF in one of the most beautiful part of this country.

Any recommendations of expats already settled there?
What is for you the best part of the island to stay?
Is the cost of living comparable to Bangkok’s?
Is it easy to get around the island, or should I consider buying a motorbike/scooter?
What are the weekend activities that you would recommend?

I enjoyed my time in Phuket when I went there for vacation, but I have to admit my knowledge about it is quite limited.

I have a full bunch of questions, but I guess it’s better to wait for your feedback.

Thank you in advance for any help you will provide folks!

HH forum .....

.... would think everything just about the same, except a lot more western tourist, and of course, most things much more expensive.

I spent most of 1999 to 2005 in Phuket and still have friends there. Great place if you are not talking Patong. Good climate and you can find almost anything you need there without needing to travel to Bangkok. But too many people there now so Bangkok style traffic jams and other overcrowding relevances are a given. I prefer southern Phuket and was mostly in Ao Chalong. Far north end is mostly Muslim. I would consider my own transport a must, at least a bicycle, altho did not always have it. Rent a motorbike for a month or two for a trial if you have damn good life insurance to protect your heirs, lots of experience and are used to Thailand’s treacherous driving mentality. But always be aware that Phuket probably has one of Thailand’s highest motorbike fatality rates.

Hello,
Thank you for your answers. So that I understand that Phuket is a city of expat espscially western people and the cost of life is a bit higher .. Hin, I feel that you know well Phuket and its surroundings, if you have some tips to give me on how to manage my facilities, habits to take quickly for example. Do not worry about motorcycle accidents, my boyfriend has been driving for more than 7 years and we are very attentive, the traffic in Bangkok really surprised us at first so we know what to expect

Hi,

>I’ve been offered a position in Phuket, Thailand.

Where? It's a big island. Some mean Patong when they say Phuket. Some business don't need to be near the beach and tourists with the related traffic and real estate costs.

While riding in Thailand, make sure you always carry a copy of your passport and list of who to notify if seriously injured or killed.

I've been living in Phuket for a while. It's a very nice place to live, even though it's getting more and more crowded.

If you need further information, feel free to ask

Pretty silly to come to a site called hua hin forum to ask about Phuket... There are much better places for your question, which we are forbidden from mentioning here for some ridiculous reason (since hhf is as much a "competitor" of these as a horse buggy is a competitor of Toyota).

True enuf but yet not necessarily true. Pretty silly..? I call BS on that. A huge % of HHF participants, including the regular posters, do not live in HH, many have never lived in HH, many have never been in HH. But most who do live here or have been in Thailand for any length of time have spent time or even lived in more than one area. So try not to be offended by the nay sayers.

The OP asked the same question on the Thailand forum of (a site that can't be named) dot com

You copied the first three sentences of one of the answers on (same site as above). Proud of yourself?

Part paraphrase, part quote from one of the answers on (same site). Still proud of yourself?

The OP posted the same question on several sites. One reply said post on a phuket specific forum and gave the link. The OP didn't post. Smells like troll to me.

Hello,
I do not understand why you are misunderstanding for not much. I had a job offer for Thailand so I'm looking to get the most information about Phuket and its surroundings. So I extend my research on several forums and people answer me, there is nothing wrong or troll as you say

Why on earth do people think someone would troll in this way? He's not trying to upset people with his answers, nor ask ridiculous questions. So what kicks would someone get out of this? It seems obvious he is just casting a wide net and asking the same questions on different forums. And there's nothing wrong with that.

If you don't want to help him then just ignore the thread. Very simple.

:agree: Couldn't agree more. I'm trying to picture someone like this...

So you've scoured the web looking for this guy's posts and even identified where he didn't post? Sounds like someone with way too much time on his hands to me...
