One last point. Do not under any circumstances rely on Google Translate.

Re: Living with a severe nut allergy in Hua Hin
Our son is allergic to all nuts with the exception of hazel nuts and visits Thailand at least once a year.
Always a real problem making sure that there are no nuts in the food.
His mum is Thai and always speaks directly to the cooks to ensure they don’t use any when cooking his meals. Equally as bad is when cooking utensils are not properly cleaned between cooking with nuts, but then cooking a dish without nuts.
Even on their last flight to Thailand, Thai Air wouldn’t serve him any cooked meals on both flights, despite us ordering his allergy free meals months in advance. They said they could not be sure their meals were nut free! 🤬
Strange, as Eva Air always ensure their meals are.

I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.

Here's my attempt.craigdiver wrote:Is anyone able to properly translate the following nut items into Thai; Walnut, pecan, almonds, cashew, Brazil, peanut, coconut oil and fresh coconut, hazelnut, macadamia, mixed nuts
Walnut: มันฮ่อ (man hor), วอลนัท (wol-nat, wol-la-nat) Not likely to find in Thailand
Pecan: พีแคน (pecan, pecaen) Not likely to find in Thailand
Almond: อัลมอนด์ (al-mon), เมล็ดอัลมอนด์ (ma-let al-mon) - ma-let = seed or nut (depending on context). All over the place, especially in cakes, but also may find in some Thai dishes.
Cashew: เมล็ดมะม่วงหิมพานต์ (ma-let ma-muang-hima-pan), มะม่วงหิมพานต์ (ma-muang-hima-pan). Common in Thailand.
Brazil: บราซิลนัต (bra-sil-nat, bra-sin-nat) Not likely to find in Thailand
Peanut: ถั่วลิสง (tua li-song). Very common in Thail dishes. May be crushed or powdered.
Coconut: มะพร้าว (ma-prauw)
Coconut oil : น้ำมันมะพร้าว (nahm man ma-prauw)
Coconut water/juice: น้ำมะพร้าว (nahm ma-prauw)
Coconut milk/cream: กะทิ (ga-ti)
Hazelnut: เฮเซลนัต (hay-sail-nat). Unlikely to find in Thailand
Macadamia: ถั่วออสเตรเลีย (tua australia), มะคาเดเมีย (ma-kah-daymia) Available in supermarkets, somewhat unlikely in food though.
Mixed nuts: ถั่วรวม (tua ruam)

Also, many restaurants use either palm oil or soybean oil for cooking, these being the cheapest options. Hopefully these are not a concern.

^^ Other than they're not the healthiest choices (supposedly).

Consider some of the assumptions one with a severe allergy must make:
- The written translation is accurate
- All who must understand it speak Thai
- All who must understand it are literate
- Peanuts (and others?) are diced. Kitchen staff will make the connection of diced nuts to a picture of a whole nut
- Kitchen staff knows which prepared (purchased, not created in the restaurant) liquids contains nuts
- Prepared liquids have ingredient labels
- Such labels are accurate.
- If Kitchen staff doesn't know which liquids contains nuts, they will read the label
- The cook will overcome habit of preparing the dish with nuts
- The food will not touch surfaces contaminated by previous contact with nuts
- Everyone involved will gladly and diligently fulfill your request
The cultural and language issues alone make it seem to me like a lower consequences form of Russian Roulette.
