Frenchwoman fined, jailed and deported for vaping
Re: Frenchwoman fined, jailed and deported for vaping
Thing is, if she had paid the original amount asked albeit illegally. She would have save herself a lot of money, hassle, and time in the Hilton.

Thing is, this was a disgraceful over reaction by the police. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. As if Thailand did not have enough trouble with the carnage on the roads, tourist boats sinking with loss of life. You really could not make this up.

Apparently, the problem is that the crime commited is being in possession of an item that is banned from import or manufacture in the country, so is considered contraband and a tax infringement as it's impossible to pay duty on a banned item. That's why the punishment seems so draconian, it's not the actual smoking of it that is the main offence.Big Boy wrote: ↑Sat Mar 02, 2019 4:28 pmI just assumed that as she'd paid her 827 Baht fine, she was now a convicted criminal (I agree a trivial crime). As such, I'm sure the law permits deportation of convicted criminals from other nations. Failure to deport could have seen her commit another similar heinous crimeNereus wrote: ↑Sat Mar 02, 2019 4:07 pmIs this part of the law as well? Or is it just the usual Thai BS?Cornu was then taken to Bangkok where she claims she spent four days and three nights in a prison cell shared with 60 other women in dire conditions where she had to sleep on a hard, dirty floor with no sheets or mattresses before returning home to France.

[Cornu claims the ordeal cost her a total of approximately 8,000 euros (B286,000) in legal fees and travel expenses.]
40k would have been cheap.
