I will be getting a new PPV SUV and am considering getting a tow bar fitted (or fit myself if easy enough).
The problem is that there is very little help on the net. I would be using it to fit a cycle carrier and it looks like I will need a removable bar type with a 50mm hitch.
Is there a place in the area HH/Pran/Cha Am that sells/fits these.
The next question is where to get a two bike rack for use with mtb’s.
I suspect this is going to be an expensive exercise.
Towbar / tow bar fitting and cycle rack
Re: Towbar / tow bar fitting and cycle rack
Bike racks are not cheap! I have a 2 place Yakima that fits onto the rear mounted spare wheel that includes a lock on the mounting bracket. I bought it in Bangkok several years ago from http://www.vvp4x4.com/. Not sure if he still stocks them as he had trouble trying to sell them. I think that it was around 8,000 Baht. The only problem with it he did not stock the correct loose bar to put on a girls bike. I ended up making one out of a couple of U shackles and a small turnbuckle.Gregjam wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 7:28 pm I will be getting a new PPV SUV and am considering getting a tow bar fitted (or fit myself if easy enough).

Some of the tow bar mounted ones do not have a swing away option, which can be a PITA. Receiver type tow bars should be an approved accessory, especially on a new vehicle.

Re: Towbar / tow bar fitting and cycle rack
Thanks for the information so far. I looked at some of the Thule racks of the type I want and the prices are eye wateringly high. The first challenge will be the tow bar but I think that the fitting for a Navara will not be so different to the Terra. At least with the changeable hitch type there is some flexibility.
Re: Towbar / tow bar fitting and cycle rack
An update. I enlisted the help of my Thai nephew as I had no response to my online messages to any of the companies who have English language website alternatives. He managed to order a hitch for an X Trail which slowed things down but highlighted how good the delivery systems are here and that although when I eventually got the correct hitch it had no instructions, there were some for the X Trail.
The wait allowed me to check online about the install and do some preparation. Should anyone be interested ask or PM me and I can go into more detail about the install. It basically went okay although it was a very tight fit and should I want to use the tow ball it will mean either deflating the spare tyre a bit or shortening the removable ball fitting by about 5mm.
The hitch is from Masterhook who have been very easy to deal with in Thai language.I did not get the electrical connection as they said this needed to be done at their garage. Not exactly true as I have seen online that this only needs a pre-fabricated section of wiring loom which plugs into existing connections but did not bother to pursue this.
Once I get the rack I will update again but this looks expensive for a good one which has a fitting to stop movement within the hitch. Am looking at Thule and not much change from 25k baht.
