Seven year vehicle test for registration

My car will be 7 years old next month. I am assuming it will need an MOT at some point. Exactly when does this become a requirement please? Also, what documentation to I need to present?

I seem to remember that there was a thread about this some time ago but it had it’s name changed because our friends from across the pond are not familiar with the acronym. My current internet connection is very poor so I have not searched for it.

I've just looked again, and there's a thread called Vehicle Test Centre, which indicates I need the test before I can obtain road tax, so that's the first bit answered. So just need to know what I need to take with me. Car, Car book, money (how much?), anything else?

It becomes a requirement at the first renewal after the car turns seven years old. No additional documentation is needed, just the cars blue book. Most places will also ask you if you require the compulsory insurance(Por Ror Bor(sp).
If you obtain that from your accident insurance company, then the answer is no. The DLT will not renew registration without proof of a valid compulsory insurance. The actual "test" is a joke, just go to any of the places with the "gear" symbol, a new one close to where you live. 200 Baht at the place that I use.

I use KC garage under the flyover. They will do the test (all of 10 mins) and get your road tax. Ready to be collected a few days later.
No extra docs needed.

I do mine at the official Mitsu garage and they are hooked up on the net to the tax issuing place and takes about 20 minutes and is like 150 baht or so. They give me a slip and I go to the tax drive through service at the license place across the road, give them the blue car book, slip from the garage and the detachable bit from the bottom of my insurance documents, pay the fee and I'm off. Admittedly not in HH but there must be a similar system there too.

To try and avoid confusion it has to be noted that the only "insurance" required by the DLT for a renewal is the compulsory(Por Ror Bor). It is NOT compulsory to buy it from any inspection station, although most of them will offer it as they are paid a commission. 1st, 2nd or 3rd class insurance is NOT compulsory, and for older cars(over 10 years I believe), 1st and 2nd class is not available.

So, the only place that you need to take ANY insurance proof is to the DLT when renewing the road tax, and that proof needs to be the Por Ror Bor / compulsory insurance.

My "new car" brought more than 10 years ago is insured through AA insurance in the Chomsin building.
It still has first class insurance although the amount insured for total right off has not varied for the past 3 years.
The compensation for injury etc has remained the same over the 10 years.
Once I have the car tested, I use the facility on the Hin Lek Fai road, AA do the rest, compulsory and tax all for an extra 100 Bhat.
Last year the test station computer system was not communicating with Pranburi so had to be entered manually there. Had to pay for compulsory and tax, got the blue book and tax back by the end of the week. AA quote for compulsory and first class was amended,
Once the car reaches 7 years the tax remains the same and does not decrease as it has over the past 7.

Thanks for that chaspul. I was wondering if I'd need to change my car at 10 years old (might do it anyway), but I couldn't envisage driving in Thailand without 1st class insurance. Very reassuring.
