Noise Polution

Post by l112a6 »

A Thai neighbour opposite my house has put up 2 large bells outside her door.
They ring all day and night in the wind, and are loud and extremely annoying.
They do not speak English, my house owner shows no interest in helping.
Any ideas, other than moving?
Can police make them take them down?

I would prefer not to bother friends to help (And they can't legally do anything anyway).

In the first instance I would try to find somebody you know who can speak Thai (preferably a Thai national) who would be willing to speak to the neighbour, before escalating it to the Police (who probably won’t want to get involved anyway).

One suspects, from the OP's description, that these are wind chime bells. Quite often also found around Thai temples, they are between 7 - 10 cm and have a bronze leaf to operate the clapper. Known as 'krading lom', the locals quite like the sounds of these and believe they bring luck. I suspect the OP will have to learn to tolerate this, as unlike another case in recent history that involved a Bangkok condo resident and the ritual temple bell ringing to wake the monks at around 4 a.m., the latter involved a somewhat larger bell (known as rakhang, and is around 1 - 1.5 meters in size) that went viral in the news. One does not want to be branded as the the farang resident who was intolerant of local culture.

We have a similar issue with noise from a nightclub. Does anyone know a company that installs double-glazing? Juristic person offers a company that offers some sort of secondary glazing but they won't cover the opening window so this would be of very limited use.

It’s an expensive solution, however to answer your question, contact SSS windows who have recently installed double glazed windows into a new house build for me and I’m happy with their work/product and pricing https://www.ssswindows.com/

I concur with Dannie Boy - SSS Windows replaced the four French windows and 10 windows at my place around a year ago and it really has been a huge improvement. The house looks so much nicer and, more importantly to me, I sleep through just about everything going on outside.

They are around 15 cm and were put up at the Chinese new year time. In the 6 years previous that I have been here they haven't felt the need to embrace their culture in this way.
I really haven't had any contact with them whatsoever but they are in general a very noisy, bothersome family However this isn't general noise, these bells are going off 24/7, actually affecting my sleep, as well as my daytime life - so it isn't something I can accept. They are loud.
I was actually told these bells were put up to annoy the restaurant's customers next door to them, which again just by word of mouth I was told they do not care for the owner. (Which is a nice guy apparently - but I don't know him).
I live by a temple also, but the early morning bells and 'chanting' are sometimes, not always.
I've had several Thai friends offer to help but I really don't want to have them involved. The house owner I believe should offer assistance here. It's in her financial interests that it gets resolved or she'll likely lose 2 long-stay tenants shortly.
I also don't want to create a personal issue with these people.

Put up 4 large bells outside your door. They will drown out the noise of the neighbour's bells.
I don't trust children. They're here to replace us.
