Petchkasem Road Markings - Resurfacing

Post by Big Boy »

 Something I didn't think I'd ever say about Hua Hin roads

Petchkasem Road has been re-laid in a lot of places, and for the first time in over 8 years, IMHO they have got the road markings correct. It had got to the stage where I was avoiding Petchkasem Road because it made little sense to Thai drivers, especially visiting Bangkokians. Bear left, bear right, don't go down that road it is only for turning right, looks like a u-turn but wasn't. I could go on.

I can only imagine the Hua Hin roads department has at last employed somebody who knows how to drive to design their road markings - very clear and simple to understand (of course there are still some 'me first' Thais and a few ignorant 'should know better' Farangs doing their own thing), but generally a major improvement.

WELL DONE to Hua Hin roads department

Looks good now but in a few months they'll wear away and we'll be back to square one. At least newly laid tarmac should prevent the old markings from coming through which happens in many places causing even more confusion.

Actually I can't fathom why they put tarmac on top where they did.

If it was to smooth out the bumps then the road section further north say 2 or 3 kms south & north of makro is diabolical!

I have a sore back last month or so and I dread being a passenger on the back of a bike or in a car around there, the sudden 'drop and bounce' is terrible on the old spine.

(I need a good back Doc but will post separately)

They didn't mark a motorbike lane, which is causing big problems with bikes stacking up behind cars, weaving in and out to get to the front of a red light. The width of the painted median is more than enough to have put the motorbike lane in again. Thumbs down!

That was never a motorbike lane. Called the 'safety zone' in Thai, I believe. It's used as a motorbike lane but it's not. Some provinces out of town designate the 'hard shoulder' as a motorbike lane but there are signs to say so which then over rides 'The Land Traffic Act, the same as a local bye law in other countries.

BB I agree, when they painted the first yellow line I thought this is a disaster, they are narrowing the road by 50%, but now I see the finished product, I think it is the best layout I have seen on that piece of road.

Phetkasem Road-new road surfacing

Post by Gabe H Coud »

I was delighted to see they were doing this.

But when I came back from Cha am on Wed night I was desperately disappointed to note that its basically no better(smoother) than before. I was travelling south between say makro and index when me and my thai lady taxi driver both commented that its almost just as bumpy as before!

Very disappointed
