Owner Roman Abramovich and the Chelsea board say they "deeply regret" the decision to join the controversial European Super League.

They were one of six Premier League clubs to join only to withdraw 48 hours later following a furious backlash.

Chelsea fans held a protest on Tuesday to make their feelings known.

"The owner and board understand that involving the club in such a proposal was a decision we should not have taken," the club said.

"It is a decision we deeply regret."

Chelsea added that the initial decision to join the Super League was taken because they did not want to risk "falling behind" their English and European rivals.

However, they said they quickly recognised that their involvement risked damaging the club's reputation.

Yet another example of a billionaire owner so far detached from real life. These people live in a cocoon of luxury and privilege.

That report is only a precis of the full statement from Chelsea.

Chelsea clearly got this badly wrong, It was a crazy decision to join a crazy half baked idea, that as now reported, hadn't even appointed a CEO.

But a bit unfair to attack Abramovich, who actually did come from a pretty basic background, being orphaned at a very early age and someone who has pumped in millions since he bought the club 18 years ago.

It's interesting to see that Pep and Klopp have since attacked EUFA's new plans for the Champions league, which were approved lasr week and will result in extra fixtures for the top teams.

Anyway, here's Chelsea's 'letter to supporters of Chelsea FC' in full, from the club website:

This is not going to go away quietly. Apparently "binding" contracts are involved and a huge grant from JP Morgan investment bank.

Perez is desperate. Real Madrid are in a desperate financial position. JP Morgan, no doubt steered by Ed Woodward, have stated they clearly miscalculated the response by football fans to the proposed league. It may well be resurrected at some future stage, but not as it stands. EUFA will clearly still be the controlling body and relegation and promotion will be included. Not what the Americans involved or Perez want.

The guy is delusional and just trying to desperately hang on to an idea that he and Andrea Agnelli of Juventus hatched up together. The ESL project is as dead as a dodo and has about the same chance of coming back from extinction, certainly in the short term.

Maybe a few years down the road they might try again but I suspect the reaction will be the same.
